my first gun was a Taurus 617 .357 mag subby (pic in signature). I like the .357 mag for it's versatility. you can definitely shoot .38 sp +Ps in it, and you have the option of shooting a more powerful caliber with time tested stopping power when you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm not really familiar with what makes a good battle sidearm but i wouldn't mind seeing the S&W M&P full size serve our troops. I know from personal experience it's a great gun and as an added bonus it's American made.
