My Mother is recoil sensitive, I got her a 22 mag semi auto pistol prior to the Bill Clinton ban. It holds 30rds and is very reliable. If she turns it loose you better get down or be gone!
I was listening to the father of the 15yr old young man who recently defended himself and his sister near Houston (Tomball) Tx. (Michale Berry Show?)
When the burglars (2) started ringing the doorbell repeatedly and peeking in windows, the young man got his sister and himself up stairs and...
The original 38-44 data (as already mentioned) was loaded by Elmer Keith. 173grs SWC infront of 13.5grs 2400. Fired out of N Frame 38 specials. Lead directly to the .357 magnum.
Some of my real loading books from the 70' list 10grs 2400 with 158gr cast bullets for medium and large frame 38's...
In 1976 I bought the model you describe with an 18 bbl, pistol grip with folding stock plus the original cheap wood. Still have it except I got rid of the pistol grip and folding face destroying metal stock! 7 shot mag.
My Dad got the 20" version with rifle sights. 8 shot mag
Both guns are...
I would get him a 3" 1187 or 1100 (if Remington still makes them). Then when he needs 3.5" performance, buy some hevi shot or tungsten matrix shells.
Note:
My 1187 is very finicky about being clean, much more so than my 1100's. That just means I wipe the gas tube and sealing rings down...
Dang it gspdave45 you beat me to the Sierra 165 gr Gameking HPBT!
It began life when Sierra answered their customers request for a big game bullet HPBT. People had been using the 168gr Matchking target bullets but wanted more controlled expansion on animals. So Sierra brought this baby out...

A good series of powders for both rifles (.308 W and 7mm Rem) is IMR-4895, IMR-4064, IMR-4320. They give good service in both cartridges with a variety of bullets.
If you desire to get top velocity with one powder, step up to a 30-06, then the IMR-4350 and IMR-4831 powders will give you top...
For those who are interested, over at castboolits they have a wealth of information on BH and related velocity. Too soft and you get leading, too hard and you get leading, not to mention with the wrong lubricant you get leading!
A little reading will answere many questions...
IMR 4831 or IMR 4350 or Accurate powder of the same numbers, do not need a mag primer. A regular LR will light these of with no problems. These are the classic powders for the 7mm Rem with any bullet weight and will give you top velocity with a full case.
Keep two (2) revolvers or (semi autos) by the bed.
Fire one till it is empty (revolver) or jamed (semi auto)
Pick up second weapon, access situation and repeat if needed.
More seriously, two handguns of the same type by the bed adds enough redundancy to save your bacon if the first...
