    Mosin 91/30 Question

Open the bolt, pull the trigger, and slide the bolt back. What years are they?

Out of battery firing today at range.

That sounds like the warning on kinetic bullet pullers. I wonder if that has ever happened? Thats a scary thought. Glad your friends ok.

    7.62x54mm - incendiary or not?!

It sounds like Albanian surplus. I have the exact same bullets. They have a copper/steel jacket as well as a steel core. If the red stripe is on the case neck and the primer, its just sealant. The sparks are probably from the steel jacket/core hitting rocks. Thats why most ranges in Ca...

    Favorite .22lr Rifle Manual Action

I like the bolt action .22's. The Remington 511-x is the only .22 I own. I learned to shoot with my dad's 511, then he bought one for me in better condition for my 12th or 13th. birthday. Great rifle. A pump action looks like fun.

    Mas 36

I just picked one up for about $150. It looks brand new except for a recent ding on the handguard. The date is on the bottom of the barrel near the receiver. I have not shot it yet, however my intention was not to make it a frequent shooter. They are said to be very accurate when you can get...

How I love me some California, and the DOJ (and Turners Outdoors)

I usually go to the San Bernardino Turners for cleaning supplies and occasional ammo (almost always out of stock). I try to stay away from the gun counters because of overzealous sales people. I miss the days of they're unlocked surplus rifles out on display. I was too young to remember...

Is it wrong to modify a common military surplus rifle?

My 91/30 looked really bad when I got it. I mean light shellac with the dark red stuff later brushed on the forestock only and running down toward the buttstock. :barf: I thought I could refinish the wood without too much trouble. Well, 3 times later and I still don't like the way it looks...

    Mosin Nagant Recoil

I did the same thing today. Shot at .22 most of the day, then shot my 98k. Ouch! I have not shot a 12 gauge in about 7 years, but I remember the recoil being much stronger than the mosin or a mauser. Being very skinny, that steel buttplate really starts to irritate.

    Mosin action screw woes

I can't find a tap that size, so I'll guess I'll buy a new magazine. Or I could shim the mag. and make that 1.5-2 turns of the screw work.

    Mosin action screws

If tapping new threads doesn't work, I guess I'll have to replace it. Hopefully the mag. isn't too much.

    Rifle for home protection?

Sounds like an SKS is your cup of tea. I don't know how familiar you are with them so I'll assume little to none. Ten round magazine semi auto. If you live in the more free states, you can put a detachable 20 or 30 round magazine on it. Most Yugoslavian models are under $200. Russians are...

    Mosin action screws

I tried this thread in the gun smithing forum, but thought Id try here too. I got my 91/59 yesterday. While disassembling this very greasy rifle, I found that the action screws were tight, but the magazine was loose. Turns out the threads in the rear magazine/trigger guard are crossed...

    7.62x54R Overpressure?

The only ammo that gives consistent extraction trouble in all my mosins is the 1970's copper-washed Hungarian heavy ball and the 1950's Czech. heavy ball. If I shoot slowly, nothing else really causes problems. When I do get a case rupture, it sometimes is hard to extract.

    7.62x54R Overpressure?

The Polish light ball seemed to do this with all my Mosins. I have had some split halfway down the length of the case. Most just do what you show in the pics. It seems like a lot of people have this happen. Maybe I should, but I don't worry about it too much anymore. Ive always thought its...

    Mosin action screw woes

I got my 91/59 today. While disassembling this very greasy rifle, I found that the action screws were tight, but the magazine was loose. Turns out the threads in the rear magazine/trigger guard are crossed. Thankfully, the screws are usable. From what I can tell, the thread size is a 7mm x...

    Soldering a 98k rear sight

Soldered it today. Seems to have worked. I used some of that heat absorbing paste. I hope it didn't get things too hot.

    Accidental discharge?

Same as kungfuhippie, only with a Remington 511-x .22. I was sitting and was in the process of standing up or vise versa, but had already chambered the next round. Thankfully it was pointed downrange and it hit the backstop. Even with a .22, it scared me. I realized that I need to stay...
