    MEC 650 shotshell loader

A buddy of mine who was moving gave me an old MEC 650. I'm not sure what is all in the box but there is a ton of misc stuff. The press looks like its missing some parts but still looks okay. According to the owner's manual that came with it, its from around 1966 or so. Should I get it...

Is there any 7.62x51 hunting ammo (not FMJ)?

Someone on another board who doesn't load wants 10-20 rounds of hunting ammo for his Spanish Mauser (not FR8) which can only handle safe 7.62x51 loads. He says that his gun isn't safe for 308 hunting style loads. But is there any soft point/hollow point hunting loads with lower 7.62x51...

Bought a bunch of bullets, buyers remorse...

I saw a box of bullets on a table, about 500 of them. They were 308 caliber 165 grain FMJ bullets with a cannelure. Turns out that they are steel core and that they are actually .309-.310 caliber closer to .309 than .310 in the bunch I measured. I am thinking that these were bullets pulled...

    Balloonhead cases...

...how can you tell what they look like? And what calibers did they come in? I recently got some 45-70 that has UMC headstamps and they look slightly odd. Could they be balloon head? I would love to see some good pictures showing the differences between the two.

Have some 385 grain 45-70 bullets, need some loading data

I have a bunch of 385 grain cast bullets that i want to load. I cant find any listings for the powders that I have. I have IMR 4198 and IMR 4350 that I would like to use. Heck, I even have some of that odd military surplus rifle powder that I will probably never ever use: RAD-78L-(7383)...

Flash holes very big, a big problem?

In my expermiments in converting berdan to boxer primed brass (7.5x55 swiss), I ended up with about 20 cases that have very large flash holes. About 7/64s in diameter. Quite a bit more than the standard flash hole diameter. I haven't loaded them up or anything but I am wondering if I should...

Does one HAVE to outside chamfer brass?

I trim my brass and then end up with it having that flashing edge that needs to be chamfered off. So I put my chamfer tool on my drill and gently chamfer the inside all 50 of my 308s that I was loading up. Since my chamfer tool won't fit on the end of my drill when i want to do outside...

Are powders shaped like they are because they have to be?

I have wondered about this. Its a given that ball powders meter/flow much better than stick or even large flake powder. So why don't companies make all their powders in small ball format instead of stick or flake or other larger size?

Any problem with loading 460S&W with 454Casull dies?

I just got a 460 and want to start loading for it. My question is that I'm using the lee 454 Casull dies to load it. The problem is that the 454Casull sizing die is the same as the 45colt Lee die (even says 45colt on it) and it will not size the lowest quarter inch or less of the 460 case...

Having a brain fart, can you load cap and ball converted pistols with smokeless?

I have a Uberti 1858 steel frame with a R&D conversion cylinder. I haven't fired it at all yet but I forgot if you can load light cowboy smokeless loads in 45 colt for the conversion cylinder. Also, provided you can use smokeless: can you shoot jacketed bullets with light cowboy style loads...

Are there any berdan primed 223 out there?

Not steel or plastic or whatever, but brass 223/5.56? Just wondering for scrounging purposes when I go to the range. I know that there is quite a bit of 308 berdan primed (7.62x51 nato).

Why are my 308s sometimes hard to chamber?

I am loading for a gas gun, a Saiga 308. When I let the bolt fly forward, it will chamber the rounds fine but other times, they won't lock up easily unless I let the bolt fly forward. I am resizing them with RCBS dies that are set to touch the bottom and slightly tightened beyond that so...

    Converting Berdan brass to Boxer

Why don't companies tap this untapped market and make tools useful for converting berdan brass to boxer. I have seen the links how to convert brass where they make do with tools like a ball bearing, the RCBS swaging tool and a few other odds and ends but it seems like someone like RCBS could...

What would have happened? Wrong bullet in 308

I was loading up a few rounds of 308. I loaded them up and once I was done, I inspected them carefully only to find one oddball that had a different OAL than the rest and seemed to have a different bullet (FMJ, whereas the rest were soft point. I pulled the bullet only to discover that it...

    Kinetic/hammer bullet puller

I have wondered about something. They give you those collets when you buy the hammer but they usually suck. Someone showed me a trick of using a shell holder instead of the collet in the hammer for banging the bullets off. Is there a reason why you should NOT use a shell holder?

Going to be loading 45-70 for my new Marlin Cowboy, what loads are safe?

Like the title says, what loads are safe for the Marlin Cowboy 1895CB 45-70. I see in my manuals like my Lee that there are 3 sections. Trapdoors, levers, and modern rifles. The levers they listed are old original levers like Winchester and so on. Is my Marlin considered a "modern" rifle...

How does one do progressive loading with Rifle calibers?

I have a Hornady Lock and Load AP that I normally use for 45acp. I have been planning on loading some 223 and 308 with it but I want to know what is the best procedure for loading rifle calibers? The reason why I ask is that I don't see the huge time savings. You still have to full...

Indian 308 ammo. 97 OFA headstamp, recharge?

A friend of mine has a couple of cases of this stuff that is known to be bad. He is asking 300 a case with 640 rounds in each case. I'm thinking that if I can get each case for 250 and pull all the bullets and reload the cartridges with powder, it might be a good deal. What do you guys...

Trimming 308 brass, too short-still usable?

I was setting up my Lyman trimmer the other night and trimmed about 7 peices too short. The min trim to length is 2.005 but I was shooting for 2.008-2.009. 5 of the brass are around 2.002 and 2 are way under at 1.996. Are they still save to use or would I risk too much headspace and a...

    Winchester 680 powder

What is this powder good for? I recently got a pound of it in a deal I did. I shoot mainly the common pistol calibers such as 9mm, 45acp, 38spcl/357, 40s&w, and rifle calibers like 223, 308, and 7.5x55 swiss. Is that powder usable for any of those?
