Question on how the SAA was carried in the 19th century

Nowadays we are strongly advised to load and carry SAA revolvers with five rounds only, hammer down on an empty chamber. The first click when cocking the hammer is the "safe" position that theoretically allows carry with six rounds. Is it known what was commonly done in the 19th century by the...

    Remington R51 news

I received an e-mail from Remington yesterday that their improved R51 will be available on dealers' shelves Aug. 12, 2016. If you go to Remington.com there is lots of info on the improvements, videos and the owner's manual. Hope they got it right this time.

    Revolver marking?

Just picked up a 1981 vintage Smith model 10-8 nickel plated revolver. On the left side of the frame under the cylinder TWC 2830 is stamped. I am assuming that it's a property mark for some PD, corrections agency or security company. Anyone know what the TWC stands for?

Question on statement in Ruger SR1911 manual

In the owner's manual for the Ruger SR1911 there is a paragraph on dry firing the gun. Basically it's OK, but they add the caveat to always have the magazine in the gun when doing so. So my question is why, it's a 1911. What could keeping the mag in the gun possibly protect. I understand that...

    First outing with Ruger SR1911

Picked up my new Ruger SR1911 a few days ago and had the first opportunity to fire it tonight. Sent 154 rounds down range, 100 rnds of WWB ball, 40 rnds of Federal Champion ball and 14 rnds of my 200 grain lead SWC handloads. The pistol was field stripped, cleaned and lubed before the session...

    1911 jamming on last round

I have a Springfield GI 1911 45 that exhibits jamming with some mags, but works 100% with others. The problem is that the last round will feed and the gun will fire when the trigger is pulled, but instead of proper ejection the base of the cartridge case is jammed into the mag feed lips and the...

Shooting the Webley Mark IV .38

There have been a couple of threads recently about the availability of surplus Webley Mark IV revolvers chambered in the English 38/200 or commonly known in the US as S&W 38 (not to be confused the 38 special). I recently obtained one at my local den of iniquity here in the Philly, PA area and...

S&W 10-5 with possible police markings, ID requested

Picked up a S&W model 10-5, vintage 1978 with s/n 2D83xxx. Nothing special about this common example of a model 10 except for the crude engravings, "BMP" on the frame and a property/rack number on the back strap. The gun shows normal holster wear on the muzzle and cylinder, but is very sound...

S&B copper plated steel cased 9x19 ammo.

There are many threads about shooting steel cased ammo, usually about Wolf ammo, but this report is about the new (at least to me) Sellior and Bellot 9x19 copper plated steel cased ammo. I bought 2 boxes of this to try as it is a bit cheaper than a lot of the brass cased ammo now after the...

    U. S. Armory, Springfield , Mass.

Had the opportunity to visit the Armory last week. Closed down in 1968 it now functions as a museum and National Historical Site. Exhibits range from flintlocks to the last rifle manufactured there, the M14.

Check it out before you buy it.

Went to the usual place that feeds my addiction and what do I spy but a 4"pencil barrel model 64. First one I've seen in person. The friendly pusher hands it to me and I start checking it out as per the sticky on the top of this page and lo-and-behold it flunks the hammer push-off test. No model...

Ammo for the Nagant- Serbian is good!

Had the opportunity to shoot one of my Nagants with the Hot Shot ammo imported from Serbia by Century Arms and sold by them and J&G. Don't know the actual ballistics, but seemed to have much more umph than the Russian yellow box target and maybe even more than Fiocci. What really impressed me...

    Shooting a musket for accuracy

Just picked up one of the Indian made Long Land muskets imported by Middlesex. Now I know it's no rifle, but would like some feedback from those of you who have been tinkering with these smoothbores as far as practical accuracy. For instance, using a patch ball will they group into a pieplate...

    New S&W MP40

Didn't really need it, but I laid my money down and came home with a new Smith M&P40. I have now put 200 rounds through it, 100 each of Federal American Eagle and Winchester White Box. All fed and fired with no problems. The pistol itself is well put together with no obvious faults in the...

    Diagnosis needed

I purchased a S&W model 10-8 with a 3" barrel and round butt 2 weeks ago and have run into a problem. The ex-police revolver while vintage 1981-82 appears to have never been issued based on lack of holster wear and minimal cylinder ring. The problem is unpredictable failure to fire when shot DA...

    Observed today at Social Security

This old fart had to bring in his birth certificate to Social Security today to verify age. Went to the Norristown, PA office and observed that the armed guard from the Federal Protective Service carried a wheelgun, a Ruger GP100 SS with a 4" barrel. I wonder if this is typical of the Federal...

    Police agency user of 686?

Just picked-up a used Smith 686 no dash with the M stamping made in 1985. The grips are wood Smith target grips. On the butt of the left grip is crudely scratched in N.C. 13304. I am speculating that this number is a police dept. property number and that the N.C. is possibly North Carolina...

Last year for Smith and Wesson nickel plate?

The thread title says it. Just picked-up a 15-3 in nickel plate, vintage 1977 (11Kxxxx) and was curious about when Smith stopped selling nickel plated revolvers.

Colt OP from the Roaring Twenties.

My newest toy, to keep my stable of Smiths and Rugers company. S/N 536XXX puts it about 1927-28, first year or two of production for the Official Police. Some holster wear, but bore and action are in great shape and shoots great with 158 grain loads.

Durability of Smith .357 N frames shot DA

Several threads in the recent past have alluded to timing problems with Smith .357 N frames when shot DA, ie, battered cylinder locking bolts and bolt windows. This all due to the great momentum of the heavy cylinder. My question is: can one shoot these guns (models 27 & 28) DA without damage...
