newest my latest purchase was a S&W M&P .40 compact w/ interchangable backstraps and 3 mags...$419.00 out the door and a free box of 185 gr. ball ammo...great gun, nice weight and balance, but too small to properly control 185 gr. ammo...165 gr. is much friendlier. (sorry, no pics)

My first I was a late bloomer, I guess...after I got out of the Marine Corps, I purchased a Ruger SecuritySix .357 Magnum with a 6 " barrel...I've since graduated to a semi-auto Para-Ordinance .45, I still have the Ruger, my wife refers to it as HER "Dirty Harriet" gun!

If I were him I'd go to the local indoor range and rent all 3, if possible - see which one suits him best. That was my first piece of advice to him...now he wants me to hold his hand, while he buys one, and he also wants shooting lessons!

I have a friend who is short, very heavy and NOT proficient with firearms, He was asked to qualify with a semi-auto and promised a pay raise after qualifying on the police range, he must choose a Glock, Sig or H&K in .40 S&W. He has short pudgy fingers and fairly small hands...what say you and why?

additional question Lonestar, thanks for the additional info, you caused me to think of another question regardiing semi-autos in general. If you have a semi that likes to run "wet" ie. a lot of grease or other lube in and around the mechanisms, what do you use? I own one of the early model...
