Quick question: How to tell a hammer forged barrel?

Aside from the exterior spiral marks on a CHF barrel that is hammered to final profile, and not using a bore scope there is not any good way to tell unless the barrel is marked. Most barrels that are made by this process for use in AR-15/M4 pattern weapons come from Fabrique Nationale, or...

    Remington dismantlement described

Good riddance to Remington. I once got fired for telling their CEO at the time, Tommy Milner, what I thought of the model 710. Remington management wasn’t interested in making a quality product, and they weren’t interested in critical feedback. Now they and the company they lead is dead and...

Witt Machine Clamp on muzzle brake adapter -NOT GOOD!

Clamp on muzzle device is all you had to say, it’s one thing to thread on and have a clamping function to clock the brake where you wanton the threads; but a clamp on brake or thread adapter that just clamps on the OD of the muzzle? Yeah hard pass, that’s just a bad idea that rarely if ever...

    Slingshot that slide.

I use slide stop levers if available and I get lock back. A lot of current pistols the slide stop lever is located where my thumb wants to be and I don’t get slide lock, so I sling shot more than I would prefer. I’m slowly but surely getting rid of any pistol that I can get more than the tip of...

    CZ A01-LD: Your Impressions

Also 460 researching CZ trigger issues, if the problem hasn’t been resolved yet you might have a trigger bar spring that isn’t adjusted or seated correctly. If it’s not flush with the inside of the frame and/or the legs aren’t putting positive upward pressure on the trigger bar you could be...

    CZ A01-LD: Your Impressions

Hmmmm.... this gives me pause. I’ve been looking at buying an A01 LD with the optic cut after watching some positive reviews. Even sourced 3 CZ P10F/P09 magazines already, the gun intrigued me because I can run it in USPSA Carry Optics, Production, or Limited (depending on configuration). Plus...

    Secret Service rifle condition?

As pointed out the Secret Service agent in the photo has a full mag, weapon on safe. He’s also carrying a Knights Armament Co SR-16 CQB. Very nice carbine.

Two Missions, Two Paths, One Gun

I think I’d go .44 Magnum for lever and revolver combo. More common ammo, and in a DA revolver or lever action the .44 Magnum has more case rim for the extractor to work with. Lever guns don’t have the best primary extraction to begin with, so helping the gun out with a more generous rim is a...

Two Missions, Two Paths, One Gun

Aside from being common I guess I don’t see a huge advantage in running AR mags in a bolt gun. While I’m a big fan of the AR/M4 platform, the biggest limiting factor to increasing the practical capabilities of the AR-15 from a ballistic standpoint is designing cartridges around the limited...

    Trigger for bench/target ar-15

I’d go with the Geissele 2 stage national match trigger or their also excellent SSA-E. I despise cassette style triggers regardless of manufacturer because once a foreign object gets in there and ties up your trigger you are screwed. With a trigger that uses the normal lower receiver pins you...

    Talk me into this caliber

Did you notice the word “too” in my post? I know reading thoroughly is a big ask on an Internet forum, but that word implies an additional benefit in this instance. Go back and re-read what I had to say.

    Talk me into this caliber

I’d go .416 Weatherby over the other two anyway. You get a lot of bullet, going very fast. Which means that if you can tolerate the recoil, or get a good brake installed, that you can use it on North American critters too at distances the other two won’t be as capable of.

No there was no point to miss, your "argument" is without merit or point.

Prone position with AR 15 and 30 round mags

Have you ever shot a Mini-14 at 300 yards? I’ve never observed one hold groups at 100 yards off a bench that would be of much use at 3X the distance. I guess if 12” groups before introducing shooter variables is good enough for you when you could have 1/2 that whatever. Again shooters being...

Two Missions, Two Paths, One Gun

As mentioned the Tikka is a nicer rifle out of the box, particularly the trigger, action, and barrel. Tikka is owned by SAKO and they use the same barrels off of the same hammer forging machines, and SAKO has been at the hammer forged barrel business for a long time now, quite a bit longer than...

Prone position with AR 15 and 30 round mags

At 300 yards all else being equal that Ruger Mini is gonna get crushed by a quality AR.

Prone position with AR 15 and 30 round mags

Jam the mag into the deck, put your support hand thumb over the hand guard applying downward pressure. Get a good cheek weld and put downward pressure on the stock. If you don’t do either and let it fulcrum on the magazine without controlling both ends of the carbine your results will be poor.

    AR buffer question

Should work just fine, you’re going to have to experiment with buffer weight based on how much gas drive you end up with based on ammo choice and the gas port size on the barrel. The VLtor A5 system might be worth your consideration.

Two Missions, Two Paths, One Gun

Good luck with your decision, I suspect you already made it and are seeking validation. So with that in mind if a lever gun is what you’re after the older Marlin 336’s are considered to be a lot better than the current guns. At least .30-30 isn’t difficult to find. If you end up with a non...
