    Glock 23

An NIB G23 is $519 at the local gun shop in my area, so $479 is a good price by comparison. The G23 is a fine carry gun, including IWB. :)

    Lay-a way Guns

At the local mom-and-pop gun shop, layaways have a three-month term. For good customers who are buying high-dollar guns or who have several layaways already, the owner will sometimes allow four months. Down payment is supposedly 20%, but the shop is pretty flexible about this. Buyers have...

Anyone NOT sending their Ruger LCP back?

I'll take advantage of the recall to send my LCP back to Ruger. Was thinking of sending it back anyway, because it does not feed reliably. So, for me, the recall is timely. That said, the safety issue alone is enough to send it back. Just can't take a chance on something like that.

    Shooting With Glasses

With my trifocals, I use the middle lens (intended for the distance of a computer screen) to focus on the front sight. My head tilts back some, but not so much as with the bifocals I used to wear.

    S&W Mountain Gun

S&W also did a run (5,000?) of Model 625-6 .45LC Mountain Guns in 1996, CAN**** serial number range, product code 130045.

    Model 36?

Where I live, the local gunshop has a blue 3-inch Model 36 in 95% condition for $399. I'd grab it, but it's just too pricey. By contrast, $275 for a 36 in excellent condition sounds cheap. :)

    RG Revolvers?

Okay, this may not sound credible, but the owner of the local gun shop says it's true. He says one of his longtime customers collects RGs and has dozens of them. He knows what they are, but enjoys collecting them. Sounds kinda funny, but hey, collecting is often an end in itself .... :)

Colt agent for S&W airweight J-frame, fair trade?

I like Smiths, but I would never trade a Colt for one, assuming they are in similar condition. :uhoh:

Which would you buy for ~$500

The list contains a number of world-class pistols, so it'd be hard to go wrong. Personally, I would choose Beretta 92 first, Glock 17 second, and CZ-75B third. I own examples of all three that have proven to be very reliable. Another possible option would be a Browning Hi-Power. YMMV!

Thinking about buying a S&W 645, any info?

Magazines for the 645 are the same as for the 4506 and are readily available new from the factory for $41.00 or from CDNN for $29.99. The magazine has gone through two or three changes over the years, so look for the newest version, which has a black follower. A solidly-built pistol like the...

    Birthdate for S&W Chief's Special .38

    That would be 1982. :)

Consensus on the "most stout" 10mm handgun

I have a G20 and a G29 and see no reason why either should ever fail in normal use. (Admittedly, I did have a quality problem with the G29, but Glock replaced the entire gun and the new one runs fine.)

    S&W 3913...Did I get a deal or not?

The 3913 is a world-class personal defense pistol. I bought mine over ten years ago and knew right away it was a keeper. SCSW3 lists its value at $500 ANIB.

    Ressurect my Mini-14

I may be able to help with question 2. 44mag.com and cdnninvestments.com both have Ruger factory 20-rounders for $49.99 each. I've bought Mini-14 mags like these from both sources and they are new in the box. Ruger-made mags are 100% reliable IME.

    mmm... brand new glock ;)

The G23 is a world-class pistol and should give good service. As for aftermarket parts, I personally think the best Glock is 100% factory for reliability and warranty purposes. Kydex holsters are excellent with Glocks. :)

Beretta 92fs italian made vs american

The Italian 92FS I bought earlier this year had fewer plastic parts than its US equivalent, but Beretta plastic parts are high quality, so the Italian pistol is really not "better." Twenty years ago, I'd have said Italian Berettas had a nicer finish, but I don't think this has been the case in...

    Broken 442

No doubt the factory will take care of the problem under warranty, but for the hand to simply break in an S&W personal defense revolver like a Model 442 is pretty darned bad, however infrequently it occurs.

    S&W Model 19

In that time-frame the original stocks would not have been Pachs. My nickel 19 came from the factory with target hammer, target trigger, and checkered wood target stocks.

Old paper shells: What's the worst that could happen? :)

Paper shells used to have a reputation for swelling up and causing jams when wet. I can't say I've ever tried to fire a shotgun with damp shells, but if I was concerned about this--like when hunting in rainy weather--I'd likely prefer plastic shells as a precaution. YMMV.

Is it just me, or does everyone go through barrel length phases ?

My first quality handgun was a Model 10 with a six-inch barrel. My taste in barrel length has definitely changed, because this six-inch tube looks awfully long nowadays. I still have it, though.
