I'm just speculating, but since .45ACP is a low-pressure load, I would think that a case would start to split due to repeated belling of the case mouth before the dents ever became an issue. Reloading forum would probably answer that better. I reload, but AFAIK I don't have any .45ACP cases...

For car/house, the 3" is pretty obviously the way to go, IMHO. For carry, the 3" will go darn near anywhere the 2.25" will, with the exception of pocket carry. There are a lot less holster choices for the longer barrel, but a little looking around should still come up with something...
