you're absolutely right rbernie...I misunderstood you the first time. I stand corrected.

I figured it out. I feel dumb for not noticing it earlier: The fore-end tube has a nut on it to retain it in the fore-end. This nut had become loose and was preventing the slide from fully closing. I tightened up that nut and she's back to normal. Glad it was something that easy!

The gun has been disassembled and reassembled correctly several times since this problem develped. I've also had several other people who are familiar with 870's take a look. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. No broken parts and everything is assembled correctly. We're all scratching our heads.

My 870 express just developed a problem where the breach won't lock with a shell in it. Without a shell, it locks fine. I took the gun apart and insepcted it, including the trigger mechanism. There doesn't seem to be any damage and the gun is clean. This problem came out of nowhere. any ideas?
