Working Up a 223 Load. When to Stop?

Hello Guys, Been reloading for rifles for only 8 yrs or so. I have this Colt 6720 HBAR, 20 in, with 1-9 twist. I have been shooting my reloads using Hornady 55 gr FMJBT with IMR 4064 and H4895. Shooting from bench with front rifle rest and rear bag. Charge: 24.0, 24.3, 24.5 using H4895. I...

Blue Dot vs. Unique for the 357 mag

Hi Guys, I've used Alliant 2400 and Blue Dot for my 125 gr JSP loads in my GP-100. I'd like to try Unique in order to make my powder last longer (uses less grains per bullet), but have a few questions about this powder. 1. How loud is Unique compared to Blue Dot? 2. How is the recoil...

New Fedex rules on shippings firearms?

Hi guys, Has Fedex just made it easier for us to ship firearms to an FFL holder? (for example to a gunsmith for custom work). I looked at their website: http://www.fedex.com/us/freight/rulestariff/prohibited_articles.html It doesn't contain any indication that priority overnight is...

Ever feel like you're chasing after the wind?

Please forgive me but I just want to vent. I started reloading in 1991 when I was a young man in my early 20's. Back then, a can of powder costs $10.00, a thousand primers cost $10.00, 500 rounds of lead bullets for my 45 ACP costs around $18.00 (retail). Never had to buy in bulk. A very...

    38/357 cast bullets. Proper diameter??

Hi Guys, I noticed that some casters use .358" while others will use .357" for their cast bullets. Do you know why this is? For example, Missouri Bullet Co. uses .357" for their target grade HBWC's (BNH 10), but will use .358" for their 158 gr SWC's (BNH 18). OTOH, Kead Bullets uses...

Copper scouring pads for cleaning chambers and barrels.

Hi Guys, I used to buy these copper scouring pads (no-name brand) and they used to work well for cleaning revolver chambers, and gun barrels from lead fouling. Recently, the ones I've been getting have been scratching my bores. The old ones I used to get really felt like copper and easily...

How to protect recoil shield during cleaning?

HI Guys, Many years ago I saw a product from Remington--a piece of plastic that goes in front of the recoil shield to protect it from being scratched when you are pushing a cleaning rod through the bore. Do you guys know what this is called or if such a thing exists? I was cleaning my...

    357 mag, 125 gr bullets, and Blue-Dot

Hi Guys, I have a stash of blue dot for reloading my new 357 mag purchase. I noticed that Alliant no longer recommends using this powder with this bullet weight. Does anyone still use this? Is Alliant just being overly cautious? I have a thousand rounds of 125 gr JSP's in my...

    GP-100, 4" full-lug or 6" half-lug?

Hi Guys, Which one balances better for target shooting? The full-lug 6" is just too heavy for me to shoot lead reloads. My preference is for the 4", but I'm able to score the 6" half-lug for almost $100 less. What do u guys think? Thanks in advance!

Why so many crooked Ruger barrels?

Hi Guys, I've been perusing this forum, the Rugerforum, and the firing line forum, and I keep on seeing this issue w/ Ruger revolvers. Is the occurrence of improperly screwed barrels really that high w/ Ruger revolvers? I've been wanting to buy a GP100 but am holding off because of this...

    Ruger GP100 6" vs 4" barrel?

Hi Guys, I'm interested in purchasing this gun but can't decide between the 4 or 6 inch barrel. I used to have s S&W 586 w/ 6" barrel. I shot mainly magnum rounds through it and recoil was very controllable. However the gun was a tad heavy for longer shooting sessions or shooting lighter...
