Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

MANY THANKS SIR!!! This is just fantastic website with black powder calculator. I tried to see what we can get from 45 Colt, stuffing 42.5 grains of FFFG, behind 300 grain bullet, assuming that I am correct in my posts #24 and #57, and this is the result: If I have it right, "Barrel length"...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Vibratory table is a device that is used to compact loose material like a sand, soil, metal dust, etc, when it is in a jar or pot. It could be also used for cleaning with some kind of abrasive. In our case for compacting black powder in brass...

Just stumbled upon very interesting thread "Full Power 45 Colt Loads" on https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=57532.40 , and post by medic15al, Reply #42 on: June 04, 2016, 01:07:18 PM: The load is 40 grns of FFFG (3F) Olde Eynsford under a 250grn PRS Big Lube bullet. All loads...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

"Shooting a cylinder full of Bullseye (Ruger Old Army) without damage" is actually the fact, but for testing purposes https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/roa-loaded-w-smokeless-evidence.844542/ . Bill Ruger wanted sturdy revolver that even the dumbest guy wouldn't kill himself and sink...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Also, I can use RCBS Rock Chucker for compression, and Lyman Turret for seating. However, I am thinking about press in my previous post for (among other things) bullet swagging. I do not want to ruin Rock Chucker.

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

@Ugly Sauce, thank you for so detailed explanation. When I mentioned "powder should be still slightly pressed with bullet", I was thinking about compressing AFTER dumping powder through drop tube. I would expect that using drop, tube powder will be more compacted at the bottom of the case, than...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Vibration table is just a possibility. Otherwise, if I am going to reload, it will be using drop tube. If I got it right, after damping black powder through drop tube, ideally, powder should be still slightly pressed with bullet. Any suggestion how much bullet should be pushed to further...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Anybody tried vibration table to get black powder compacted in the case? How it compares with drop tube? Seems to me as a simple procedure; using standard powder measures, damp powder in cases, cases in loading tray, and whole tray on vibration table. Any affordable vibration table that will work?

    reverse percussion conversion?

Brits are doing that for a while. Here is Czech ALFA converted to C&B, even proofed for smokeless powder. However, caps are 209 for shotgun: https://www.westlakeengineering.com/products/

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

For your review: My 45-300-BP-2 compared with very successful 43-215C http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=43-215C (209 sold). As you could see, grease groove length is the same on both bullets (.160), so there is a plenty of lube for a black powder. I am not sure would...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

It would be interesting to see what kind of velocity could be gained from 7.5" Ruger NMBH, using properly loaded 45 Colt and 300 grains bullet, like this one:

Please forgive me for silly questions, I am total a beginner in black powder! Any benefit of using drop tube and special compression die before seating a bullet?

You didn't specify the distance. If the group is on 50 yards, it is very impressive, if distance is 100 yards, it is OUTSTANDING!

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Very interesting! Would you please specify the powder, the bullet type, its weight and OAL of assembled round. A number of times I had seen videos where shooters specified that they were firing black powder rounds. In some cases a lot of smoke was created, but in some not so much smoke that I...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

It would be interesting to see what would be muzzle velocity from 500 S&W using black powder, fired from revolver with 8-3/8" barrel. Yeah, a bullet with large grease groove would be the way to go, something like this, but .500" dia: Accurate Molds 45-260F...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

A good candidate for larger 45 case (shortened 460 S&W) would be converted Ruger 357 Maximum. Since its cylinder is about .25" longer than standard 45 Colt cylinder on NMBH, I would say that with longer case and round, black powder charge could larger for at least 10 grains, with drop tube and...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

When reloading using smokeless powder, my (and everybody else's) biggest concern is that right amount of powder is dumped in each case. As a standard practice, I reload on sunny day, in the morning or afternoon. After dumping powder in cases, as a last checking before bullet seating, I take a...

    Who needs 357 Dainty?

For personal defense from two leg predators, and if "the worst I'm likely to come across is a wild dog or coyote", I agree with you regarding 357 Magnum. For anything larger, I would set minimum: Caliber: 41 Magnum. Bullet 265-270 grains with .320" dia meplat. Muzzle velocity: 1100 fps. Yeah...

Today I found a new way to screw up.

About fifty years ago we managed to get an old K.u.K. (Austro-Hungarian) pistol Roth-Steyr M1907, cal. 8mm Roth–Steyr, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roth–Steyr_M1907 . Three of us (very young) were in mountains, and while in a small cabin, a friend pulled a slide, loaded round in magazine...

    Affordable borescope

I was recently at local gunsmith and he checked bore on my rifle. But, to my surprise, he didn't use one of those borescope devices with long tube and eye piece, but little lens with a light, attached to flexible cable and plugged into bit larger cell phone. Looks to me noted setup that...
