Do expensive scope rings make a difference?

I've grown fond of Warne bases and rings. I do have Leupold on several rifles that work fine also. It's a little like Ford verses Chevy for the most part but there is always a Bentley for those who want it bad enough.

Savage Model 14 Classic - my experience

Congrats on a fine rifle. I have the model 14 in 223 and 204, great varmint getters. I did have target crowns cut onto both rifles to eek out a bit more accuracy. Also a big fan of Warne mounts and rings. My 308 is a T/C Icon that loves 168gr A-Max over 44gr of Varget. Best wishes.

Best Bolt Action Hunting Rifle on the Market for the Money

http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/icon_classic.php If you can find one of these in your price range (they may be bordering on your upper limit) it's going to be the most bang for the buck, IMO. I have one in .308 that is truely a 1/2 MOA rifle right out of the box, best wishes.

    Weatherby Vangaurd ????

My Vanguard Sporter is in .270Win that's been cut down to 22", free floated, with a target crown, and had the trigger smoothed up and lightened by my gunsmith, it's one of my favorite deer rifles. Don't be discouraged reading about my version, I fiddle with almost all my rifles trying to eek...

Need a scope for my new savage

These scopes are overlooked by many http://www.nitrexoptics.com/products/riflescopes/tr1/3_9_42.aspx and can be found new and priced very reasonable. I have one on a 300WM that I've been testing for toughness and the scope is exceptional, the glass rivals my Zeiss Conquest 3X9 for half the price.

Prvi Partizan 150gr Softpoint in .308

I was using their 168gr match bullets today in my Icon and was having great results. They shot better than I expected, my rifle must have finally finished breaking in, LOL. More than likely the trigger nut was just having a good day. I see no reason not to use the brass for reloads, it looks fine.

Who is using H322 for .223 bolt?

23.1 grains pushing a 55 grain v-max yeilds great results for me out of a Savage model 14 with a target crown cut onto it. Tiny groups at 100 yards when I do my part, like it better than Benchmark and it isn't bad either.

Do you really need to "break in" a new rifle?

I use an even more rigorous break-in process on centerfire rifles. Conversely with new .22's a good cleaning before the first round and then only after accuracy falls off. Many times a .22 bore will require a couple hundred up to several hundred rounds with intermittent cleaning before the bore...

Comparison of 380's Which one to buy.

Mine is a P3AT and it isn't pretty, not much fun to shoot targets with either but it's small and durable and goes bang when I pull the trigger. I carry it in a little pocket holster that mimics a wallet. It goes undetected and is perfect for my intended purpose. If I had it to do over I'd...

    Effectiveness vs. Too Much Risk...

Interesting thread for sure. Our home is free standing and there is just the two of us now. I want something that will shoot through walls, doors and darn near anything else that gets between an intruder and myself. My choice has been and continues to be 45acp in 230 grain ball. With that said...

    savage vs remington

I have two Model 14's and an older (60's) Model 700 and like them all. The Remington (6mm Rem) has had a trigger job and both Savages (.204 Ruger & .223 Rem) had target crowns machined onto them. I personally like the accu-trigger but they aren't quite as nice as a good customized factory...

Chronographed some rem factory 243 ammo today

I'm new to handloading but accustomed to my short barreled M700 in 6mm Rem. I built 100 grain loads that were in the middle of the charging chart and they made tiny groups at 100 yards so that's what I'll be using on whitetail once in a while next season. The Remington 100 grain Core-Loct I've...

    ok, i need a 200-400 good scope..

I have a Nitrex 3X9 TR1 on my M70 300WM and highly recommend them: http://www.nitrexoptics.com/products/riflescopes/default.aspx You get some nice glass, it's built in Japan not China, a tough no frills scope that is a great value IMO. I do have many Leupold (made in the U.S.A.) and like them...

    Too protective of my guns?

My rule on loaning anything including money is don't do it unless you're comfortable never seeing it again, you'll never be dissapointed and delighted when it's returned or paid back. Additionally I have many single use tools that I could have borrowed but elected to purchase instead staying...

    Anybody do instinctive shooting?

Point shooting has been around a long time. We were taught it in firearms training over thirty years ago. It stands to reason that in many real life situations point shooting may well be much preferred, IMO. Nothing can substitute ample practice though, handling your weapon enough that it...

Why is the Lee so CHEAP!

I gave $10 for a lightly used Lee O frame. Completely new to loading and after a little trial and error, patience, and calipers was able to make .223 Rem ammo to within 15 thousands using a press that was veiwed with obvious distain at the reloading shop where I bought it. I've managed to throw...

    Your thoughts?

Thanks for the replies. Weighing my options which are somewhat limited I decided to go with a Lee hand press reloading kit, Redding series A die set: full length die, seating die, and neck sizing die for .204 Ruger, Lee powder measure kit, CCI small rifle primers, 32 grain Hornady V-Max bullets...

    Your thoughts?

Thinking about getting a Lee Classic loader in .270 Winchester. I watched some videos and it looks pretty easy to use. I don't have room enough for a press and all the jazz that goes with it, this simplistic method may be the best for me at this time. I don't know what components I'll need...
