    cleaning the bolt assembly.

Field stripping the bolt requires compressing the spring, which can be done in the field by hooking the back end over a shoelace, compressing and turning it out.

    Barrel Break in Question

My $0.02: I agree with Mr. Eatman: Clean the rifle (especially the bore), shoot it, and clean it again when you get home. (After the range session, clean the bore, then hit it with some copper solvent and check for a green patch after 10 minutes or so. Repeat until the green is gone. A...

Who Prefers the A2 Fixed Stocks?

The A2 is a rock solid platform. I use my A2-configured rifle offhand and with a sling. It is heavy, balanced and perfect for long distance shooting. A well made collapsible with a lightweight upper is great for mobility and flexibility. Different tools for different tasks.

    Jewel Triggers

My Remington 700 .30-06 has a Jewell in it. I think it is a great trigger, do not mind the narrow shoe, and have had no problems. However....I have heard of others complaining that you need to keep these exceptionally clean, else they will not work properly. I use no oil on the trigger...

Ballistol is good on wood and should remove the Cosmoline.

    Springfield Trapdoor .45-70

The Trapdoor is a great, historic rifle. The Marlin has a stronger receiver in which you can shoot a high powered load. As I recall, just about any Garrett cartridge can be fired in a Marlin; not so with the Trapdoor.

Best new / used shotgun in the $250 range (range / hunting use)?

+1 on the used Wingmaster suggestion. Gunbroker might be a good source for pricing info.

A Ransom Rest is the only way to exclude yourself from the shooting equation.

My dad's probs with Ruger MK III Hunter

Before sending it back to Ruger again, pull out the Loaded Chamber Indicator (see Gun-Talk online for instructions) and see how it runs. It can always be put back, and the empty slot has no effect on the gun other than looks.

    compass lake nm rifle

Call CLE and ask them how you can positively identify it as one of theirs. The heavy front end is normal on a match rifle. Weight is good...it helps to attenuate body movement. Most highpower shooters add a buttstock weight and a balancing weight under the handguard. A 16 lb rifle is the norm.

    compass lake nm rifle

Don't chop it! Compass Lake Engineering makes top-shelf match equipment. Google them to find out more. Either sell it, or keep it as-is. If the barrel is shot out you may need to replace it. Take it out and shoot it to find out how it does.

    New Shooter

The .22 LR is an excellent way to start. The minimal recoil and blast will enable her to focus on fundamentals and not be overpowered by the firearm. An AR-15 is also a great, low-recoiling platform. The "evil" part of black rifles is only in your -- or her -- head. Firearms are...

    AR-15 build questions

Given the OP's primary requirement as a HD tool, I humbly suggest forgoing a rifle and instead opting for a scattergun (a new or used 870 Police being an excellent choice).

how important is barrel break in

Sure thing. I wanted to explicitly point out the link to Mr. McMillan's [dissenting] point of view. In my view, when read closely, Gale DOES advocate a break-in, but not as a formulaic approach.

Thoughts on picking my first gun.

I'll weigh in on this and suggest a CZ-452 .22LR with iron sights. This is one of my favorite rifles: it is inexpensive to shoot, great in the field, and the iron sights are good, keeping me well inside the 5.5" black at 100 yards. The rifle also has dovetails on the receiver if you want to...

how important is barrel break in

Barrel Break In I've follow Mr. McMillan's advice with great success on two barrels: a White Oak service rifle upper with a Wilson S/S match barrel and a Remington 30-06 factory barrel. http://www.6mmbr.com/GailMcMbreakin.html

First handgun: Springfield XD vs Glock 17

Between the two, I would go with the Glock. If you're open to a suggestion, take a look at the Glock 19. It's the G17's smaller cousin, but plenty large enough. I like Glocks because they are easy to clean, repair, and buy parts for. Maybe that's the case with the XD, but I don't own one...

    Les Baer accuracy

The issue is trigger control, not the pistol. Try dummy rounds mixed in with live rounds. When the hammer falls you will likely see that the sights move off the intended target.
