Build a new top end for a 1911?

Jim Watson is probably correct that it would be more expensive to add all of this to the original. A new gun could "correct" this with not much difference in cost. Ed

    Weak points of the 1911

THe weak points are not very weak in my opinion. But.. The plunger tube on a SVI or STI in built into the fame and is one piece with the frame. The internal extactor - a case can be made for the external extractor but the internal works OK for me. The internal extract costs more to get...

    How many polish new brass?

I polish my new 38super brass. Not for pretty or deburring but to get a light coat of wax on them. They then reload much more smoothly. On everything else I might polish new brass if I ever got any. Ed

    Barrel threads question

I realize that there were standards but they were not nessariliarsI realize that there were standards in both Europe and the US but they were not always used. I have had a few machines made from the teens to the late thirties (my father collected them). These were from Germany, England and the...

    Tumbling finished bullets?

I have had people go both ways on this. I would say yes but not too much. There is an issuse that has been brought up as the powder would break down into small pieces and therby change the burning rate. I don't know about that but if you just tumble enough to clean the crud off it should be OK. Ed

    .38 Super Resizing Issue

I have used EGW undersizeing die on 38 Super for years. But still there can be a problem with a small bulge into the un-supported area of the chamber into the feed ramp. I was unable to fix this with the EGW die I could ge most of it but not all of the bulge would go away. I then spend way too...

How Tough is the 40 S&W to Load For?

40 Brass fired in a Glock can be distorted. I buy brass a local gun shows and have been buying $8-$10 per M. What I have done to solve the disorted brass issue is to use a single stage press with a 40/10MM die with the top cut off. then take a pusher like a .223 case and push the 40 brass up...

How useful are nylon bore brushes?

A thousand years ago in the Army we used patches on string. We had steel rods but it was easier to use and faster to cleanup after. If we used a string that was oal * 2 + hand grip range it works great. Tie the patch on with a quick knot and your off. There is very little chance of barrel...

    Selecting a barrel for a 1911

I have several Schuemann AET barrels and they are quite accurate. I don't know if they are as or more accurate than others but I have found that they generally more accurate with difference type of ammo. What I mean is- if you have 10 different loads for 45 you may find one that will shoot 1/2'...

How useful are nylon bore brushes?

Mr romulus I would like to thank you for you comment on soft materials taking imbeded grit and then cutting hard material with the grit. I have tried to explain this to people for years to no avail. By the way if you ever watch a glass ingraver they use a dead soft copper wheel and spin it...

    Barrel threads question

I think you will find that before the 1930's thread standards were not realy in place. Not just in this contry. Europe ie. England and Germany and France did not have standard thread sizes, pitches or forms. The general consensis was on 60 degree thread forms. Even then we still have standard...

    Extractors

Generally in years gone by "spring steel" was 1065-1090. This makes pretty good springs. Today some extractors are made of 4340 or 416 stainless. If the geometry is correct and heat treat is good then as TUNER has said, almost all of these will/can last quite a while. I remember as few years...

    Selecting a barrel for a 1911

About the Main Spring Housing (MSH) being flat, arched or wedge. I think you will find that is depends on your hand size. Generally, not aways, the larger hands like arched or wedge MSH. The small hands seem to fit the flat better. This just means you try them out. Try other peoples guns for...

    Single hand vs. double hand

I can shoot better with two hands than with either one. I shot bullseye in years gone by. I have shot USPSA for many years and have gotten used to two handed shooting. Shooting with one hand probably is generally slower to draw and aquire the target. This was settled for me in the 70's when...

Custom 1911 - what would you get?

Everyone here has I lot of good ideas. I would only add information about one thing. Blueing wears and can rust. Chrome does not wear hardly at all and in far more rust resistant. There are several nickel-teflon type finishes that are almost as hard as chrome but resist rust much better and are...
