The sizing die doesn't have to be a carbide type, but carbide dies are so inexpensive now their is no reason not to use them for available calibers.
The only thing necessary to use the dies for 45 ACP and 45 Colt is the dies be able to expand both lengths of cases and be able to seat and crimp...
I bought a set of Hornady dies in 1998 that were listed as 45 ACP / AR / WIN / LC. They work just fine for me for ACP, and (Long) Colt. Hornady lists a seperate set for 45 Colt now.
I shoot an 1894 Marlin in .41 in cowboy competition. I agree with redneck2's system. I test by pushing the nose of the bullet against a bench. If it doesn't move, the crimp is good. If you are roll crimping (standard pistol dies usually roll crimp) Nhsport's point about case length is spot on...
I use gas checked, cast bullets in my SKS rifles almost exclusively. I usually get my best accuracy from 1750-1850 fps. I have had zero gas port leading.
If an SKS rifle port did lead, it would be no trouble to clean. With plain based bullets, I would suggest keeping the velocity under 1500 fps.
Hoppe's and Kleen-Bore both sell a lead removal cloth. You can cut patches and clean barrels, It is non abrasive and works well on cylinder faces, forcing cones, bullet molds, etc. It will remove blued finishes, so be careful there.
The Feb. Midway flyer has The Frankfort Arsenal Tumbler #317-981 on sale for $34.99. They don't list volume, The ad says it can handle 600 9MM or 350 .223 cases.
I would call Brownell's. They catalog a nickel plating remover #082-078-160. I haven't tried it yet, It's on my future project list. I don't know if that would work for your application or not.

Richard Lee's Modern Reloading circa 1996 lists a Max Load of 700X with a 240gn LSWC at 9.5 gn for a vel of 1185 fps at 40,000 CUP.
You might try IMR or Hodgons web site for more data.
Here's a recipe I got from a 1957 NRA article.
1 Pint water
1 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon dish detergent
Deprime cases first, wash in this solution for about 10 min. Rinse 10 minutes. Dry well in sun, oven etc. This works well, I used it for years until I bought a...
