    Mannlicher Pro Hunter Opinions

jmr40 - Thanks for weighing in with your observations about ring height. That's a deal breaker for me.

    Mannlicher Pro Hunter Opinions

BBDartCA- We're discussing the Steyr Pro Hunter, correct? If you don't mind, please PM contact info for the retailer to me. I'm looking for a used Pro Hunter or Pro Hunter Mountain in 30-06. Thanks much.

Rem 1100 problem: spring jumps interceptor latch

Virginian - I appreciate the clarification. The spring is less than 2 years/200 rounds old. I replaced it when this problem first showed up but touched nothing else. It might be time to replace both the interceptor latch and the retaining clip with the thicker part you referenced earlier.

Rem 1100 problem: spring jumps interceptor latch

Thanks for the help with the shopping list, folks. The staking tool comes into play if I decide to replace the interceptor latch spring? Or do I need it for some other element of this repair?

Rem 1100 problem: spring jumps interceptor latch

Thanks for the tip on that part! The interceptor latch itself stays put on the stud. It's the spring itself that pops out of the groove on the underside of the latch. I don't know 1100s very well at all so I have to ask - how would that retaining clip you referenced help keep the spring in...

Rem 1100 problem: spring jumps interceptor latch

Howdy. I've got a 1970-vintage Remington 1100 in 12 gauge. I am not the first owner and it was in tough shape when I picked it for a song 6 or 8 years ago. Lately, the interceptor latch spring has begun to jump out of its groove in the interceptor latch. When this happens, the feed cycle...

30/30 and buffalo bore ammo for elk or larger game

I have no experience with the ammo in question but I'd expect nothing but good things as long as you keep the range sane. Some of our most reliable hunting calibers earned their reputations by combining moderate velocity with heavy-for-caliber bullets: 30-40 Krag, .303, 9.3x62, 7x57 , 6.5x54...

    CZ 550 in 6.5x55

You know, I can't recall why I didn't use low rings. I owned that thing nearly ten years ago. CZs weren't as widely available then and it's possible low rings simply didn't exist for the 550. As our colleague from South Africa pointed out, it's not too hard to raise the comb with a creative...

    CZ 550 in 6.5x55

I've read  that the Mannlicher-style stocks aren't conducive to best accuracy. From what little I know about stocks and bedding, I can see why. But I refer you to my earlier post. Theory be darned, my full stock rifle shot lights out. One thing to be aware of on the Lux and FS...

    CZ 550 in 6.5x55

I had one and, like DPris, kick myself for ever letting it out of my grasp. Mine was the full stock model. It was not the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, but it was fully capable of putting its shots into an inch at a hundred. The consistency with which it would shoot those one-inch...

    Old School Original Scout Rifle

Based solely on your title, I expected to see either a Winchester '94 or a Mannlicher-Schoenauer. :) Was there any discussion of the merits of push feed vs. CRF? PS - thanks for posting this

    New Mini-14 FTEject

I had chimed in earlier to report a similar FTE problem. At Ruger's request, I returned my 580-series Ranch Rifle. They had it for just five working days before turning it around. The whole process including transit time took 12 working days. Not bad. Ruger didn't go into great detail but an...

    New Mini-14 FTEject

briansmithwins, Last month, I stumbled into a great deal on a used Ranch Rifle, cal . 223, with a 2009 born on date. I took it to the range and soon discovered why it was so cheap. Using factory 20 rounds mags and factory ammo, I was experiencing FTE 5 - 7 times per magazine. I talked with...

    Working class scout rifle?

Owlnmole, I've worked with my Marlin 336 for almost 20 years (yikes) and that hasn't been my experience when shooting prone. Others have made a similar point, though, so I could be the odd man out. I also realized in your original post, you specified the .308 and its close relatives. I...

    Working class scout rifle?

Cooper often held up the Winchester 94 as a reference point in the Scout's evolution and it seems like a great choice for the person who simply cannot afford a Scout which, despite efforts to the contrary, cannot be built both correctly and cheaply.

    30-30 Lever, anyone?

Found this quote from Cooper: "This little 94 Winchester in 30-30 continues to delight us. It is no 400-meter weapon, but 400 meters is a fanciful range for any but certain specialties. Out to 200 meters it does just fine, and that is the distance inside which the overwhelming majority of...

Ideas for a General Purpose Rifle (GPR) chambered in 308

I'm with Mr. Sutton on this one. I'm slightly amazed at the purposes that some people regard as general. I appreciate that several of the posters here have formed their opinions based on what they've seen in actual combat, but for most of us stateside, a sustained firefight is beyond a remote...

    General Purpose rifle

I've had two CZ550s. One was the Lux in 9.3x62, the other, a full-stock version as pictured above in 6.5x55. It was darned close to ideal and I kick myself weekly for parting with it. Double check me on this, but I believe the CZs in .308 are still based on the long action and so you might...

    General Purpose rifle

bpl- I don't want to hijack C-Grunt's thread too badly but I have looked at the Kimbers before. Not a fan of blind magazines and Kimber's 84s have had their QC issues. Otherwise, you're right, they are a great choice and I haven't ruled them out at all. Thanks!

    General Purpose rifle

C-Grunt- I have little to add but am watching this thread with interest. I'm consolidating my rifles and am seeking the same grail you're after. I've owned a Ruger GSR before and bought it to replace a Marlin 336 and a Winchester 70 in 30-06. In the end, it was a nice rifle but failed on...
