    Mauser Customer Service

Good to hear. A year ago I bought an M18 in .308, and was (am ) delighted with it. Wonderful manufacturing, great trigger...certainly better than the several Timney triggers I have on my Oberndorf Mauser and my Ruger 77s. Wonderful accuracy.. And the synthetic stock actually is half way decent...

What rifles for deer hunting this year?

I started the season during ML with my .54 cap and ball Lyman GPR,hoping to use my flintlock GPR but it rained pretty much every day. Now I am carrying my new this year Mauser m18 in .308. When weather allows I hope to get back to the flintlock.

Should I just forget about a flintlock now ?

I have gotten back into black powder shooting heavily this year, and for the first time ever flintlocks. I have a supply of powder and can sit back and see what the market does to the powder supply. I have to believe a domestic company would want to fill the niche. If not, we shall see what more...

More Guns a Bad Idea? Ammo…$

I have always been foremost a hunter ,second a shooter. That said, over the years I have accumulated way more firearms than I can shoot or safely store. Over the past eight years or so, I sold at auction a fair number of them to fund some long wished for hunts. The guns sold were redundant ...

Opinions on this Pedersoli Traditional Hawken Percussion Rifle ? Its on sale

Sometimes you can get a stuck patch out simply by popping a cap. I have also removed balls loaded without powder by pulling the nipple. and slowly trickling powder in....15 grains or so will work BUT be damn sure the bullet is fully seated before touching it off. Always.

Opinions on this Pedersoli Traditional Hawken Percussion Rifle ? Its on sale

Yep...be sure to get asap a ball puller and a patch puller..you will need them, usually sooner than later. It is a good idea to get a range rod (think a longer unbreakable cleaning rod) and a T handle to pull on when things get tight. And save every old cotton T shirt...to spend time during...

If you had a time machine…?

I think best use of my travel would be to go back to 1920 whatever Vienna, and get the admissions officer at Hitlers art school of choice to admit him.

How do you resist urge to buy new piece?

Easier than you think. No money, no gun. Much easier now than ever though. I came to realize for all the guns i had, I didnt shoot quite a few, and just as many I had no "attachment" to. I had a few long time wants...I wanted to get my vintage HD back on the road, and have always wanted a...

    Lonesome Dove Walker

"Lonesome" is probably my favorite western...as long as you arent talking the abbreviated version of it. I have read the book a couple times. McMurtry was a great writer, but unlike L. L'amour and some others, he paid very little detail to the firearms, accoutrements and daily life doings of the...

A short tribute to George L. Herter

I have a 1968 +- Herters catalog...the ultimate wish book for a budding outdoorsman. It is as good reading as any fast paced novel, in my opinion! I have a modest collection of Herters brand knives...skinners, butchers, bowie, etc. Not worth much, but great serviceble knives that help with...

    Ever seen one?

Similar weapons were set up inside windows/doors against thieves, as well as in the fields on estates by game managers for poacher control.

Hello from one ready to enter the world of black powder.

Traditions make a good gun. Check out the Muzzle Loading Forum. Chock full of good advice and alot of info there. I recently got into flinters also, after many years in percussion. You will do fine as long as you are patient, and are good at paying attention to detail. Make sure absolutely that...

Has the current market caused you to rethink how varied your ammo usage is?

I am a lifetime shooter/ hunter. I certainly do not "hoard" ammo, like you hear so much about, but when ammo is scarce I am smart enough not to keep blowing it off just for entertainment sake. Thus, for my primary rounds at any given time I have at least a couple hundred rounds OR because I...

    Why add caps last?

organized troops (Redcoats, French, and the standard US early infantry) were not issued powderhorns. They were issued cartridges for thier muskets. Informal militia who may have brought thier own rifles would likely bring horns but also prepared thier own paper cartridges frequently.

    Why add caps last?

Also, military paper cartridges had no other allowances for priming other than using a pinch from the cartridge once the end was bitten off. Bite off end of paper cartridge (In the US army, it was a requirement for all inductees to have two opposing teeth. Not neccessarily more than two teeth...

Looks like the ammo shortage is even hitting BP.

End of last week I was delighted to find plenty of black powder at Graffs and Sons at 21.oo lb. I bought four lbs. I think it is much easier to find bp than smokeless, but the most bp shooters dont shoot up many rounds in a session. Luckily I have enough primers for some time. I am finding...

    .308 Barrel Length?

I sold my Ruger .308 with an 18 1/2 bbl because simply put, it didnt do what I wanted. It was handy and great to carry, and dropped every deer I shot it at, but I was never content with its accuracy. I recently got a new .308 (mauser moel 18) in .308 with a 22 inch bbl, and it made me realize...

Modern ammo got self-defense calibers down to 9mm, why hasn't the same happened for wilderness?

I didnt bother reading all the other replies except for a quick skim...but... Essentially small high speed bullets kill with hydrostatic shock....the shock wave sent through the mainly liquid content of a body disrupting it. The .270 Winchester became a huge hit largely due to its hydrostatic...
