Best deer point of aim. Where do you aim?

I think that the diagram puts their lung shot just a little to far aft. Maybe 2-3 inches forward of the point they marked should give less chance of the bullet going through the rumen. Heart shots have too much chance hitting the esophagus, with the same sort of green goo as rumen shots. I have...

Are wild hogs good to eat?

For the big ones, the farmer I used to work for live trapped them, castrated them and fed them corn for a few months. (Castrating a 300 pound wild boar is a story in itself! Just say that it can be done with enough people holding enough ropes tied to enough hog legs.) The best wild hunted hogs...

Hunting with my 303 and the first shot didn't drop the deer

I once read a Faulkner sentence that ran on for three pages and a couple dozen paragraphs. It may be the longest sentence in American literature. ;) Personally I tend to aim lower than the shoulder, so as to hit the middle of the lung. It seems that the deer bleeds out more quickly and...

    would you eat it?

Tossup between armadillo and eel. Eel is really eerie if you cook it yourself. Keeps trying to climb out of the frying pan until its done. :what:

    Life, Death, and Suffering.

Hmmm This is a fascinating thread and I think there's more to the question than just what has been explored. (For the purpose of discussion I'll use a secular/evolutionary slant rather than any religious ideology.) First of all I think that we have a natural right to hunt and kill animals...

Your absolutely best hunting tips that the magazines won't tell you about

One way to reduce cold weather glasses fogging is to put spit on them and then wipe it off with the lens cloth. If you can't stand the thought of spitting on them, dry ivory soap can be rubbed in and wiped off to give some protection. Wearing a winter face mask, it is a possible to duct tape it...

    "Butt-Out" Product Endorsement

Harumph! Freud would have a field day anal-lizing this contraption. :scrutiny: Anybody who's ever dressed a deer knows that the nasty half fermented acorn and green stuff contents of the rumen are 500% worse than its poop. I'd buy a deer rumen plug but not this thing.

Strange Happenings In The Woods/Scary Hunting Stories

That was the best one so far. I once saw the devil himself out in the woods in the half darkness. I was 11 at the time, coming back from a squirrel hunt. Devil turned out to be a goat.

    Hunters: Please identify this track!

In the future you'd probably be able to show more definition in a photo of a plaster cast. Stuff should be mixed a little bit on the thin side and poured in very gently.

How long can meat stay in fridge?

I think armedbear is right on this one. I used to process my own deer and froze them as soon as possible but last year I had them done at a meat locker where they hung them at 40 degrees for what to me seemed like a long time. They're better when they're aged a while. :p

    AR-15 trigger

Zeke, I wanted to thank you for your link. I've been meaning to find it and print it out for about 3 years. I do have one thought about the process, one which seems to have worked well with various other guns. Polishing compound is dirty and gets all over everything. There is an alternative...

.338 federal ???? all around gun

Would you happen to have a good link to information about this round, especially as compared to the 30-06, 338-06 and 35 Whelen?

    Do-it-yourself deer hide tanning

.41 magnum man thanks for the detailed answer and info. This seems to be pretty complex; I wonder if dry ice might be the best way of freezing it for a four day road trip. I've already started looking for taxidermists. A question for all the guys who do brain tanning. What does brain tanning do...

    US Authority on Hunting Ethics.

Art, the business of doe hunting is a really good example of how people sometimes make major mistakes in the name of doing what is right, confusing style with ethics. I know a really good example of an old man who owns about 400 acres down on the gulf coast. He developed a herd of about 60-80...

    US Authority on Hunting Ethics.

I'm going to open this thread to post some important information. If anyone replies to it please keep comments on the highest level so as to avoid the unfortunate turn the recently closed 'hunting ethics' thread took. Since the late 1800's the commonly recognized US authority on hunting...

    First Buck Of The Year

That is a nice buck and from the looks of the antler bases he is a mature one, probably at least three years old. They would make some really nice knife handles. There are places on the web where you can learn to tell how old a deer is by its teeth. Link. This is easier than trying to guess by...

30-30 reduced recoil or 44 magnum

(I think the makers of the PAST recoil pad should start paying me for my efforts to recruit people to try their product.) A few years ago when I had major shoulder problems my PAST pad was the only thing which kept me in the shooting hobby. The PAST pad is an easy to wear gel filled pad which...

    Do-it-yourself deer hide tanning

.41 magnum man thank you for the professional tips. If I could impose on you for a minute, I'd like to ask a question. Would it hurt a hide, especially the hair, to put it in salt and wrap it up dry for a week before putting it in the solution? I'm planning a bear hunt next year and will have to...

    Rain gear.

Hmm. I never have found any rain gear to work well under all circumstances. (Advice is welcome here.) So I sometimes carry an umbrella. Now that is really weird if you think about it. Imagine an old fart out in the woods, sitting and waiting for the deer in the rain...
