Primers are pretty tough critters. I came back from a cruise this spring to find 6" of water on my basement floor. I had a thousand SP and 1K 209 primers on the bottom of my wooden powder magazine. The water level was such that the bottom 600 primers in both boxes were under water. I dumped...
I recently bought a box of the SWC's for the .38/.357 and I get throat lead in all my guns with .38 level loads. Checked the bullets and discovered the diameter at the base was .354 and did not get to .357 until halfway up the bearing surface! Sure recipe for leading! Gave Hornady a call but...
The only downside to some of the older scales was the fact they did not have any dampening device so they would swing above and below the center for a long time. The newer scales have magnetic dampeners to correct this as does the Ohaus 505. I sold a 505 for $30. delivered a year ago. If you...
When I started reloading I bought a Lyman Spar T turret with the optional primer feed. It is a 6 station turret and I have my Redding #3 powder measure mounted on it and load each round to completion turning the turret. I use it for small batches of pistol ammo and 30-30 rifle. Loading pistol...

I love to test boundaries and try new things. I bought the RD 100 rnfp for my Keltec .380 and it works great there as it...
Ah, great minds! A few years ago a friend and I developed a 1/2 oz. load @1200 fps in the 12 ga. I used standard wads (didn't matter what shot weight) and dropped a 1/2 oz. of shot in. Then before starting the crimp I filled the case to the top with Puffed Rice cereal and then continued to...
PO2 --Interesting chart you posted. A few years back during the first big primer shortage I was unable to get SPP's and had to use CCI SR's. Using a chronograph I noticed little to any difference with faster pistol powders in the .38/.357. One benefit of the shortage was that I found that the...
Basically anything that's safe in a taper wall hull such as the AA,RXP, Gun Club is less pressure in the straight wall hulls such as the Federal given the same powder charge and shot weight. I would use the 7/8 oz. data for the RXP or AA with 3/4 oz in the Federal hulls. The only problem you...
If you carefully turn the slug in the mic jaws you will find a point where you are just leaving the edge of one land and just starting on another. It is a very small but measurable window. I have done it many times on many S&W's.
The only place that I see it worthwhile for shotshell loading today is in the 28 and .410 ga. There the cost of new factory shells is high enough and your shot & powder use is low enough that there is significant savings. If you can tolerate the recoil from factory promotional 12 and 20 ga...
I use the CH taper crimp loading my .38's and .357 mags. I simply turn back the bell in the brass made for bullet seating. Case tension is what holds the bullet. I load all cast bullets and my mag load of 173 gr. 358429 at approximately 1300 fps gets very uniform ballistics and no bullet...
Bullets do not set back in revolvers they go forward if there is insufficient case tension or crimp. Bullets are set back in autos by the trip up the feed ramp.
+1 on KP321's post. Had a similar problem on a Rossi singleshot .357 Also possibility is broken firing pin. They can break in such a way that they don't fall out and you end up with a 2 piece pin that does not fire all the time.
I bought a Lt 20 new back in 1965 as my first "good gun". Shot it for years in skeet, hunting and still today sporting clays. Because of the skeet I know the gun conservatively had fired over 70K rounds when a couple years back it broke a firing pin. Never cleaned the internals of the action...
As the previous poster stated the 9MM case is probably the worst offender in regards to cast bullets and one that garners by far the most questions on the Cast Boolit board. The Lyman "M" die prevents the case from sizing the bullet smaller and is way better than most of the expanders in die...
This won't measure really light triggers but will get vary close with a rifle or shotgun trigger. Set the butt of the UNLOADED gun on a bathroom or baby scale and balance it gently without adding to the weight. Note the weight. Now press down on the trigger until it breaks and again note the...
