Calling all mountain men: Best Sidearm for remote hiking or backpacking

The best compromise I've found here in the rockies is a 4" 686 in .357 mag. My top 5 concerns in the mountains: People Lightning Weather Dehydration Injury / rolling an ankle Black bear and Cougar are waaaay down the list, but I feel confident with the .357 mag and a heavy...

    Ideas for birthday rifle!

Marlin 1894 in .44 mag. Heck of a nice little brush buster. Or a 336, or 1895... :)

    Question about centerfire calibers

.270 Winchester is from 1925... Man, that's older than the .257 Roberts! Must be time to put it to bed. :neener: Some people like runny spaghetti sauce too.

Recommendations for Marlin 1894S .44 mag

Put a Skinner peep sight on mine, and replaced the front / filed it down... works well. He's a great guy to work with as well.

.30-06 Range Report - Varget shrunk my groups by half... I'm a believer!

I'm using varget in .223, .308 and anything below 180 grain in .30-06. Good stuff for sure. Congrats on finding your load.

preferred powder for 44 magnum reloads?

I really like a 200 grain jhp over 12 grains of Unique for a mid range load (averages 1,366fps from a 6.5" bbl.). 20 grains of 2400 for a 240 grainer... standard primer. You can push it further, but this is what shoots well out of my 629 Classic and 1894 Marlin. Just shy of 1,300 fps out of the...

Why is Lyman Reloading Manual Held in High Regard?

I'm one of the Lyman 49 lovers... for the data. -They are the only ones that list pressures (at least out of the 4 sources I have). -I find they have more lead data available than anyone else. Good stuff. -I've found that I luck out on barrel lengths. They seem to test with what I...

which .45 ACP bullets to reload?

Nobody's mentioned it, so I thought I'd throw this out there... http://www.sanjuanrange.com/ccb_prices.htm Colorado Cast bullets - very good quality, and Paul Miller is a great guy to deal with. There are cheaper cast bullets out there, but I really like these.

    .357 recommendation for beginner: S&W 686 or Ruger GP-100?

I prefer the 686, as it fits my hand like it was made for me, and it comes with one of the best factory triggers out of the box. That said, I have shot GP-100's and found them to be solid performers. My advice to you would be to pick the one you think is coolest. You'll practice more.

    Large frame picture thread.

Man, some of those put my wheel guns to shame, but this is too good of a thread. I'll do my part to keep it going. 629 Classic: Blackhawk in .45 Colt:

    44 magnum powder.

Another vote for Unique in mid range loads... My pet load is a 200 grain jhp over 12.2 grains of Unique - clocks a tad above 1,350 fps. You still know you're shooting a .44 mag, but it's more manageable. Spicy load is a 240 grain gold dot over 20.0 grains 2400 powder... averages 1,280fps...

    What does it all mean?

Wasn't a bad idea here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Colorado_YWAM_and_New_Life_shootings Alan, you want .45 acp (also called .45 Auto). Don't worry about people busting your chops... particularly when they say things like: Again, don't get discouraged. We want you...

looking for .223 reloading data, and a question...

Varget is an excellent choice. Not sensitive to temperature, versatile, good velocities, et cetera... I'm looking at Lyman #49. They don't have a 68 grain listed, but the start charge for the 69 grain hpbt in here is 23.4 grains of Varget. Max is 26 grains (compressed). I'll try and...

    .45 LC--Big Bear Protection?

Is yours a new or old model Vaquero? My experience is limited to nuclear .45 Colt loads out of a Blackhawk, so I can't tell you for sure, but my understanding is that the New Vaquero is a much smaller frame to get closer to SAA size, and isn't as strong as the old model.

I'm not sure if this is what you're after, and I doubt it's in the $1,500 range, but I about passed out when I saw this M1 Garand wearing Walnut from Bastogne. http://www.westtexasarmory.com/WTAwoodstocks.htm There's some history to talk about there...

Ar-15 ( what parts do I need to have on hand )

For spares, what huckster said... particluarly the extractor & spring and gas rings (stand the whole bolt carrier group on the face of the bolt when it's pulled out - if it falls under it's own weight - replace the gas rings). No guesses on barrel life - depends on how hot you're shooting it.
