I have spent the past two bullseye pistol (indoor) seasons focusing on trigger control and have started seeing things come together. I shoot a Ruger 22/45 for that game.

Well, I went out to sight in my 10/22 for 100 yards from prone and my trigger squeeze is horrible. Is the stock trigger able to be made smoother and lighter or is it best to just upgrade to something like a Volquartsen trigger?

Thanks!

I'd upgrade, but I've got a Kidd trigger on my 10/22. It's a great trigger, but a little pricey.

Just replacing the hammer with a Volquartsen or a Power Custom will get you down to about a 2.5 pound pull. It won't be crisp, but it will be light enough.

If you can follow instructions, there is a how to on hammer stoning in the Tips and Tricks section of Rimfire Central that will get you to about the same thing with a factory hammer.

There are a bunch of additional tweaks to take out creep and overtravel, but just having a light pull is great improvement.

I had Mr. H. , also mentioned over on Rimfirecentral, take my stock group, rework it, and send it back. All for 50 bucks, which is cheap, he also adds a trigger stop to the group, and will get it down to the weight you want, but still safe; with the factory group, that is about 1.5 lbs. Sometimes more or less, just depending on how bad your stuff was made in the first place.

OK - thanks for the links. I think I am going to go talk to the gunsmith on my way home from work tomorrow to work out something and see if I can bring the piece in and do the work there under supervision if he'd be willing. Or just see how much it'd be for him to do it if not.

I will go spend some time at rimfire central to understand things more though. Again, thanks!

Hammer Time !!

My suggestion is buy a PowerCustom hammer. It's really simple. IF you can pull the pins and remove your trigger group, you have the ability to replace the hammer. There were no fancy shims or spacers, no springs to worry about, was a VERY simple replacement. And made a very dramatic difference in my 10/22, dropped my trigger pull to under 3lbs.

I put a Volquartsen hammer in my 10/22 and what an improvement. Give it a try. You will be pleased. Mark

I called power custom and on the spot got a nice discount for the competition trigger pack. It's wonderfully smooth and crisp...and can 100% reccomend.

I had serious Quality Control issues with my 10/22 Volquartsen hammer.

It was sent to me with the casting marks still intact over the whole hammer, including the sear faces.

I tried calling and emailing Volquartsen so that they could address my concerns, but they never responded. It wasn't until I started a thread on Rimfirecentral.com discussing my issue that I had someone from the factory contact me.

They wanted me to mail it back to them so they could replace it, and I figured it wasn't worth my time and money to mail back a $19.00 part, when I could fix it myself.
It would have been nice if they had offered to immediately send me a replacement part and a postage pre-paid envelope to return their bad part in, but I guess that I just expect too much from others, sometimes.

I ended up using a diamond hone stone to knock the casting marks down to a manageable level, then polishing it with one of my fine arkansas stones. It works O.K. now, I guess, but due to my experience, I would try the Power Custom hammer next time.

I was very surprised that something like this could leave their factory because I thought they had a really good reputation, but apparently they just have really high prices.

+1
i couldnt agree more. i did the same part-swap with 2 of mine and immediately noticed the results. the shims that come with it are the hardest part of installation, and you may invent a few new cuss words trying to line them up when putting the pins back into place, but its a cheap modification that will definetly improve your weapons performance.

I replaced the entire trigger group with parts from Power Custom. Couldn't be happier. The stock trigger was awfull.

as a whole we need to petition Ruger to try and provide us with a good trigger/action coming standard in the rifle. every time i buy a 10/22 i buy replacement parts for it before i even buy ammo. it wouldnt be a big deal and we wouldnt need VQ and PC parts installed from the factory, just revamp the stock guts to give us a smooth and crisp performance off the shelf without having to spend all the extra $ for after market
