At what fps does a 124gr XTP fragment to the point where its no longer "optimal".

I am working up a 124gr XTP 9mm Carbine load(slower powder/lower pressure/higher FPS) that is within standard pressure(close to +p) that is pushing 1600fps.

Will this speed cause severe fragmenting and less pentration?

I ask because a load exists for 90gr xtp that pushes 2000+fps plus but makes the round basically explode on impact and only penetrate about 3".

Great varmit round.

I've loaded some +P 124gr jhp Rem GS to book data that come out of my and nephew's carbines with a crack - power pistol powder. I used mine to fill a doe tag. dern near took it's head off, a neck shot that hit the bones.

Anyone know of any data on penetration/fragmentation.

My fear is at 1600fps a 124gr xtp may fragment and not retain its intended mushroom effect upon impact.

Am I wrong?

don't know about 9mm, but a 125gn xtp at 1600fps muzzle velocity will mushroom just fine (shot out of a s&w 686). only one way to find out, though.

Call the Hornady. They will have a very good idea of what velocities the bullet can handle.

124 XTP?
My Hornady #4 manual says the "useful velocity range" is 900 - 1,200 FPS.

I don't think you have to worry about the bullet losing integrity at 1600 fps., that's just not fast enough. I shot some 90 gr. XTP I loaded up with Longshot, and some with HS6 that were in excess of 1500 fps. and they mushroomed nicely.
And as someone else said, the .357 mag. 125 gr. XTP's @ well over 1600 fps mushroomed perfectly for me in a box lined with a plastic trash bag, filled with water with tightly rolled up denim, they went through and through 18" of that.
