Has anybody loaded 170 gr. flat nose for .30-06. I got 900 Hornady and Sierra 170 gr. bullets in an auction box lot. I already use the Sierra 150s for my .30-30 and I will work up a load with the 170s for it to see how they do. I figured on trying the 170s in my '.06 too since I have so many but I can't find .30-06 data for a 170 gr. 165, 168 and 175 yes, but no 170 data. Just wondered if anyone has used the 170s? Should I work up a load with 168 gr. data? I'm a novice and I've only used published data. Hope this isn't a dumb question.

:thumbup:That makes sense. That's why there's no flat point data for .30-06. Starting load for any 168gr. .30-06 is 2400-2500 fps. and max load for that 170 flat point in .30-30 is around 2100 fps. Looks like the .30-30 is gonna be getting a lot of attention this year. Thanks again.

Check diameter, some 30-30 bullets are .307"

I have loaded the 170 gr in 30-06. Killed a deer with one. It works fine. Range was under 100 yards.

Use 168 or 180gr data
Seat bullets to 3.250” oal, ignore cannelure.
I’d use same load as I use in M1 Garand. 46.0gr H4895.
I use that load for 168gr bullet. Near 2,700fps. Will kill anything in N.America with proper shot placement.
Except at very close range, over expansion won’t be a problem. Trajectory is flatter than you might imagine. Sight in +3” at 100yds. Zero at 200, -10” at 300.

List them as 30-30 bullets and trade them for something you can shoot in the 3006 in the reloading for sale area.

Either that or load them to 2000 FPS or so and enjoy a lower recoil target load that will also cleanly take a deer at 100+ yards.

That sounds like great a plan. I have 5 30-30s and love shooting them.

Just a note on which data to use in the future. I think it's safer to use the data from a 175gr bullet with a 170gr bullet. I have used them for the 30-06 but only in reduced velocity H4895 loads for a younger shooter. They worked well there.
