I just sold my Mini 14 to get another gun. I had planned on getting an 1861 Armi Sport Springfield; something I have wanted as a Civil War historian and black powder shooter. However, I have also been looking at a Rossi .357 lever gun; another gun that I have long wanted. Fun to shoot; accurate, and cheap on ammo.

One element in my choice is that I am active duty military; move a lot; and it would be difficult to get into the NSSA scene shooting the Springfield. Also, I am finding it difficult finding musket caps and black powder. However, I have also wanted a Springfield for a while and this may be my last chance (financially) to get one for a while. Also, with the less expense of the Rossi; I could almost get two guns for te $650.00 that I have saved.

Anyhow I am putting my indecision out there. Reflective thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

Get the Springfield. You have always wanted it and now seems like the time. You do not have to belong to N-SSA to enjoy it. Powder Valley can meet all your needs for caps. BTW, Be sure to get the bayonet with it. You'll like it! I love mine ;-))

If you feel it'll be tough finding spare funds later on then clearly the right way to go is to get the Springfield now while you can.

Just be sure before you leap. Nothing sucks bigger than extending yourself a touch too far and then having to sell a toy like that because of sudden downturn or some other good or bad life shift that you pretty much expected would arise.

Later you can find a new or used Rossi lever gun or some other ex cowboy action lever gun in .357 when time and money allows. And being a smaller amount needed you're far more likely to find that amount of disposable hobby money.

Thanks

Thanks, I am leaning more towards the 1861 Springfield as it will be more difficult in the future to get (with increasing prices of reproductions) without paying a rediculous price.

I appreciate the feedback.
