For some reason they keep the Goex in a "powder magazine" in the back room and require a copy of your drivers license

What is it aboutt those ASM rvolvers?

Hw could they match todays mocern crafted
better steel revolvers from outfits like Piettia?
I have several Piettias that are EXCELLENT!
Jus wondering...

Does anyone shoot minie balls with a felt wad over the powder? I load my C&B revolver with powder, then a lubed felt wad, a blob of bore butter over the wad UNDER the ball, then the ball (nothing in front of the ball) - loading is not messy, cleanup is a breeze, and even with Pyrodex I don't get a cruddy buildup in the barrel. The bore butter under the ball just seems to shoot clean.

I'm thinking that with a minie load for this gun, that I could just use powder followed by a groove lubed minie ball as per typical loading practice, but have been reading the pros/cons of lubing the base cavity of the minie as well. I understand the purpose of the minie base skirt is to "flare" into the rifling, but that set me to thinking that the felt wad which seems to work so well in the revolver might help here with distributing lube down the barrel basically just ahead of the expanding gases - so powder, lubed 58 cal felt wad, lubed base & lubed grooves minie ball using bore butter again. The thought of ramming a glob of bore butter in the base of the minie directly down into the powder just doesn't sit right with me.

I have seen 58 cal felt wads out there, so some people must practice it. Anyone here doing it?

Also can anyone help with my earlier question about the sight usage at 100-200 yard ranges? Does it stay laying flat on the barrel, or do you flip it up into the vertical position?

You don't want to use lube in the hollow base (the purpose of the hollow base is to allow the gas from burning gunpowder to expand the base "skirts" to grip the rifling in the barrel). Lube in the hollow will only succeed in fouling powder charge.

You could use a wad, but probable effect would be to reduce accuracy (think use of wad would interfer with expansion of bullet 'skirt' on rifling). Try a few shots and see.

Turns out this is the case at my local store. Missus confiscated the gun - said it was a Christmas present and I have to wait!

For any establishment to sell black powder, the ATF requires the dealer to keep its supply in an approved "magazine". The ATF specifies that the "box" be lined with 1" thick wood or other non-sparking material, and that the locks must be installed in such a manner that bolt cutters cannot remove said locks.

Even the locks have to have a minimum number of tumblers to be approved.

Then the local fire marshall can add his/her requirements since you are setting up in their locality of responsibility. It just never ends.

Sellers must verify the purchaser by photo identification, like drivers license.

i have shot .58 mini,s with the hollow base filled with crisco and never had a problem with loading or fireing and some of my best groups fired at 100 yrds were loaded like that. for a hunting load i have a mix of beeswax and crisco that i dip the mini in with a tweezer that i grip the bullet by the nose with and that puts a thin coating of the lube into the hollow base and over the whole bullet that does not run when dry.. eastbank.

Found the 3 band brother to this gun in another store today - but for $700, well used. British proof marks on the barrel and the Parker Hale cartouche on the stock, so I'm assuming it is also an English manufacture. Feel really good about the $450 I paid for the unfired musketoon :)

Price was a bit rich though given the condition it was in. They had a used Pedersoli Brown Bess for the same money in somewhat nicer condition. Just can't justify another muzzle loader for that sort of money at the moment given I haven't had a chance to pop the musketoon's cherry yet :(
