I have been hitting the local shops for my christmas present. Been wanting one of these babies for awhile and this one looks like a good candidate. I am looking to buy one and have it refinished as a shooter. Gun is a type 3 going by the lug on the end of the barrel?

The good: All the markings are in good shape. The plastic colt grips have no cracks and are in excellent shape. It has patina, but no heavy rust or pitting. Mag is marked 32 cal colt. I need to look at pics to figure out if it is a colt, but the magazine is old. It shows were but the lips are not cracked. Safeties function.

The bad: The finish is mostly gone. The front sight blade is missing. There are some light scratches on the pony which can be removed, but may make the logo faint. The barrel has very faint groves, but I have never seen one with deep grooves. There is a ding on the slide where the side meets the back. Its smaller than an eraser head, guessing the gun was dropped.

Price is 295

Here is what I would like to know. My plan would be to send the gun to a smith to get the sight replaced any idea what it would run? Would also have them replace the springs and give it a once over while I am at it.

I want the gun to be refinished, is there anything that can be done about the ding on the slide? If it can be repaired any idea on cost?

Really like how the gun feels in my hand and have no qualms about the caliber. I don't think I will cc it, but it might get drawer duty if I prove accurate with it.

I don't know if it can be repaired to your satisfaction, but that 1903 is on my BUY ON SIGHT list if I ever see one in good shape for sale.....

Glass beading under parkarizing is a good refinish method for hiding mild pitting and scratches but will also remove most very list inscriptions and lettering.

A ding can be weld filled and blended using nickle silver weld rod which will also take most gun finishes.

Front sight can be made and installed and springs are still available.

Price for gunsmithing with refinishing would be somewhere around $175-$200 in my estimate and sight unseen. HTH

I can live with those kinds of costs, but I will get it blued. It will run a bit more, but I prefer the original look.
