Ok. If I'm not using the correct terms please forgive my 1911 ignorance. I have a Remington Rand 1911 that belonged to my father. The grip safety doesn't function. It flops around with no resistance whatsoever. However, nothing rattles in the grip. I can only assume that the spring was removed. How much of a pain is this going to be to replace? Is it complicated enough that I have to take it to a smith? I am slightly mechanically inclined as I have installed a target trigger in my Ruger MKII with no problems.

Floppy Grip Safety

Howdy Slugcatcher, and welcome aboard.

It's possible that the right leg of the sear spring is missing, but since a single, tri-function leaf spring controls the grip safety, sear and/trigger/disconnect
reset functions...if it was missing, the gun wouldn't function at all.

Now for the good news.

Since I have a deep affection for all USGI 1911s , I'll send a sear spring to you and walk you through the replacement procedure...by phone if need be.
If you can assemble a model airplane, you're over-qualified to do the replacement. Send me a PM with an address and it's out the door tomorrow.

Standin' by...
