I'm just finishing a project gun and about one out of 10 cycles the hammer will follow slide forward. I don't cycle it with an empty chamber, always with dummies to make it as real as possible. I installed an EGW fire control kit and fit the sear using the Eb Brown sear jig. I cut the relief angle using a .020" feeler. I think I may have taken too much off of the relief angle, bringing the contact point out on the hammer hooks making it easier for the hammer to fall off the sear. The hammer hooks are right around .021" so I don't think the hooks are too small. I'm just trying to get some more expierienced advice before I order a new sear. I have also increased the tension on the sear spring so I'm really thinking it's the sear. More advice the better.

I too am interested in the replys you get. I have some ideas of my own but I would rather see what the experts say first.

Followdown

I coulda swore I answered this one last night... Probably posted on another thread. Right about now, the readers are scratchin' their heads and thinkin' I've been in the cookin' wine.

Anyway...

Welcome aboard Oscar. Good to have ya. A few questions...

Does the hammer follow all the way down, or does it stop on the half-cock?
Does it follow when you pull the trigger and hold it before you release the slide...or only when the trigger is free?

How wide did you leave the primary sear angle? At minimum, it should be at least as wide as the secondary, and even that's pushin' it a bit. For my own use, I don't cut the escape angle any further than 25% of the primary's remaining width.

.021 hooks are a wee bit short, but should be okay if everything else is good.
Personally, I won't go any shorter than .023, but that's just me.

Did you go to a light mainspring, or stick with the standard 23-pounds there?

Standin' by...

EDIT TO ADD:

I knew I wasn't losin' my mind...I DID answer it. You posted the question on two boards. I'll let both stand for a while, since it's drawn attention and it's a good question, but in the future, please don't cross post identical questions. I gits confused a mite easy...

We have strict rules against asking Tuner about sear/hammer hooks issues before he has has a least 10 cups of Turbo-coffee in the morning... :D

Anyway, you can do some homework by reading the following past thread. You will find it to be quite complete, and it may answer some of your questions.
