I'm looking for a fun gun/game gun. So, the Glock 34 comes to mind. But, what about a 1911 in 9mm like an STI Trojan? Any experiences? Good? Bad?

The only 1911 9MM I've ever seen was a Llama. I have zero use for a Llama. if you're strictly looking for a plinker may I suggest a CZ82 9X18 relatively inexspensive to shoot, fairly accurate & really not a bad CCW

springfield makes a 9mm 1911 loaded that frequently makes its way into my range bag

I picked up a 9mm Colt LW Commander as part of a trade-in for an old chevy pick up in the early 70's thinking a could sell it at a gun show. I fired a few mags thru and have had it every since . It is not the best shooting 9mm I have but it seem to end up being with me on many occasions. I just like it.

I wish RIA would make a 9mm priced like their .38 Super. To me $700+ for a gun who's purpose is to shoot cheap ammo doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

In the meantime, the Star BM is a good 1911-like substitute, although getting extra mags can be an problem.

The CZ82 is a good gun, but the days of cheap 9x18 ammo are gone and reloading components for it are limited.

Let's not forget Colt. I picked up an old stock NIB Colt plain jane 1911 (1991 actually), sent it to Wilson Combat to make it the way I like my 1911s, and am very pleased with the result. Just last weekend, I was hitting a 6" silhouette at 50 yards nine out of ten times. Economic shooting on a platform you are used to. What more could you want?

which games? I'm guessing IDPA as you aren't penalized for shooting below the .40. If so, yes, the STI trojan is an excellent choice! I have a bunch of rounds thru mine, you won't be dissapointed in the fit, finish, trigger or reliability! Very soft shooter and plenty accurate. Bigger bonus is the huge backing they give the gun games.

I have a Star B. It's old, but I got it for the price of a good lunch and it is a great shooter. I would trust my life with it if I had to. It never fails. It's well built in every respect and hoot to shoot. The magazines are hard to find, though.

Springfield 9mm 1911

I shoot a 9mm 1911 in IDPA and it works great. Accurate and fast shoot as there is little recoil launching a 9mm out of the fullsize Govt. I shoot it in the ESP division - then at my range bag I switch over to the 45, using all the same leather, then I shoot again in the CDP division.

why is 9X18 ammo becoming expensive I can still get it for 10.00$ a box

I can still buy 9mm $8/50 or a bit less. Plus 9mm is available pretty much everywhere, 9x18 is generally not available at WalMart, for example.

Just saw a Springfield Armory 9mm 1911 in stainless yesterday. It went for around $900 IIRC. Looked sweet. Cheaper to feed than my .45 Kimber...gets one thinking...

If you are wanting a nine and want a metal and wood gun then you need to look at a Hi-Power.

I had an STI Trojan in 9mm
Wonderful gun, very thing (incredibly thin), well put together, never jammed.
Very little recoil (shock on that one huh? heavy gun, only 9mm, worked quite well).
Magazines were somewhat difficult to get good ones. I'd even buy from STI and only half of those would work. :scrutiny:

After a while I realized I wasn't shooting it. I was shooting my glocks in 9mm and my 1911's in 45 and it was confusing to have a 9mm 1911. So I sold it.
But it ran like a clock.

I have been gearing one of my Hipowers for competition (the FN hightpower, carry the Browning. It has been modified by novaks and is the factory chorme model. Mainly finding 20 rounders for USPSA event in limited class, and 10 rounders for USPSA limited 10 and IDPA.

I have been shooting a Glock 34 since this summer. Parked the 1911's. I don't reload and don't want to get back into it. I haven't reloaded in about 30 years, don't really want to get back into it either.

So I went to 9mm. I have used my Hipowers for CCW from time to time. And they are gaining on carry time vs my Colt Gunsite Pistol (government of course).

By the way. I payed $15.40 per 100 rounds for Wally World Winchester White box. Last week when I bought a case (1000). The 45acp is twenty eight bucks and change per 100. That is not quite 10 cents per round difference.

Go figure.

I've got 6" Trojans in both .45 and 9mm. Both have been extremely reliable. Nice finish and obviously well put together. I have had no issues with them at all. Both are far more accurate than I can shoot them. I did have a S&W 952 that I sold ( A blasphemy of some kind, I'm sure)-I just could never shoot that gun accurately. In any case, I can shoot circles around it with the 9mm Trojan. It may just be the longer sight radius. One thing I did find, come to think of it was that I have yet to find a lead bullet that works well in the 9mm Trojan so I just use jacketed in all my 9s.
I also shoot a Glock 34, BHP Standard and a CZ 75 SA. The Browning and the CZ, particularly the BHP, have the best feel in your hand but the Trojan is the accuracy king

I tend to shoot mostly 9mm for fun / competition.

I really like my Springfield 1911 9mm for steel matches.

I initially tried a CZ-75B, then a Browning Hi-Power Practical in 9mm. Nothing particularly wrong with them.

Lately though, I find myself shooting a Glock 34 more than anything.

I suppose in a perfect world, my ideal choice would be an STI Tactical. Probably the 5.0 version.

How's about a CZ75? Not single stack, but a refinement (and improvement, imho) over the HiPower and a great full-sized 9mm that can be carried cocked and locked.
