All it is between the Taurus PT1911 at $499.00 or the Rock Island Tactical for $475.00

This is from a local shop. I have one other 1911/Wilson and a 625JM. I am looking to just pick up a 1911 fun to shoot range gun to take with me every trip. This is from a local shop, I was leaning towards the RIA but the guys at the shop whom I really respected are telling me I should really get the Taurus but I am wondering if that is not because of the price. I say that because I have seen really good reviews of the RIA here but everyone there in the shop does not like them and they say they have had way more problems and returns on them than the Taurus.

So which one would you choose and why between these two?

That RIA is the Match one right, not the Tactical. I got the same speel from the dealers here too, when I got my RIA and EAA Witness. I guess they had problems back in the day or they want to talk you into a hi end (price) pistol. Get the RIA and don't look back. Have you been here? http://forum.m1911.org/forumdisplay.php?f=17 good info there on the RIA

Cheers

I had a similar situation. The -only- reason I finally bought the Taurus is the ambi safety (though I never intend to carry this pistol). RIA seems to be a fine sidearm.

I have heard alot of good stuff on the RI, but i think I would get the Taurus for all the extras that comes with it.

I too wanted a range and a fun 1911 that didn't cost an arm and leg and am pretty happy with the RIA pistol. In fact my neighbor who looks down on anything but series 70 Colts was impressed how tight my gun is. Still breaking it in and so far it looks like it's a keeper.

it is actually the Tactical version, with the beavertail etc. They have a used standard RIA there as well for $315 in great shape just none of the features, which at this point I just really want the beavertail.

That picture is the exact model they have on hand.

I don't think a $25 difference in price means they're trying to push the "higher end" gun on you. Maybe if you're comparing a RIA and a Kimber they're trying to get you to buy instead. Personally I'd go with the Taurus.

I like my PT1911. I'm not wild about the finish on mine and the factory mags could cycle a little smoother...but it has been trouble free. I would recommend one to my best friend but I have also read the RIA 1911 is a good range gun as well.
