I'm considering doing a little home smith work on my 1911(s). They main thing I'd like to do is put the real metal back on my Kimber and be able to take it apart for cleaning.

I've seen the reccomendation for Kuhnhausen's book and will probably order one. What tools will I need to be able to take it apart and change parts out? ANy kits?

I have a good smith in the area who is more than fair and I'll probably use him for the bigger jobs but I'd like to be able to do some of it myself as well.

Start by buying Kuhnhausen's .45 Shop Manual. It will explain everything you want to know, including what tools to use for what. You will find it at www.gunbooks.com and also www.brownells.com

If you go to Brownells also buy a hardcopy of their catalog. Therein you will find all of the parts and tools you might need. The only limit is your pocketbook.

But you should always start with the shop manual.
