Hello,
I have a Kimber compact that the thumb safety has moved to the fire position from safe while carrying concealed on 2 occassions. Guess it rubbed against some flab or something. I think the safety feels like the spring is weak. It's definitely weaker than the spring on my Dad's colts or springfield. Is it easy to replace? Should I do it myself or have a smith do it? Where would I get a stronger spring? Thanks.

You can put a new spring and plungers too if you want in it yourself. Cock the hammer (UNLOADED GUN!!), lift the safety toward the 'on safe' position and pull out at the same time. It might need a little wiggle while it is coming out. Now pull the plunger out. To replace it you put the new one in and re-install the safety.

What might work better is to mark where the plunger hits the safety when it is in the on safe position, remove the safety and make a VERY small indent in the safety. Install the safety and see how much harder it is to move to off safe. It doesn't take much of an indent at all to make a big difference in effort required to move the safety.

To remove the plunger tube spring and pins you need to remove the safety. BUT IF YOU DON'T WANT IT EMBEDDED IN YOUR EYE OR LAUNCHED ACROSS THE ROOM, remove the slide release and slide and barrel FIRST, this relieves tension on the spring and prevents the launch. The barrel and slide don't need to be removed but if you don't they will probably fall off anyway because the slide release is not there. THE 2 PINS AND SPRING can be now removed, there is a kink in the spring , it is supposed to be there , that is what keeps it from falling out and getting lost.
