At the range yesterday I shot my Browning Hi Power then my Springfield 1911A1 consecutively. This is not a BHP vs. 1911 thread as I like both pistols a lot and shoot both regularly. They are just different with neither being "better" than the other, IMHO.

After shooting the BHP, I found it difficult to get a good grip on the 1911. I really haven't noticed this before as I usuallly take one or the other to the range and don't shoot them consecutively. What grips would you recommend on a 1911 to help make it more confortable. I have relatively large hands. Thanks.

Remember, the HP is a double stack even though it's a thin one. To get the same feel in a 1911 you'll need some beefier grips. But there is also a depth issue between the two with the depth of the 1911 being slightly longer.

Before I bought anything I'd try adding thickness by placing some shims under the current grips to see how it feels. Just going thicker may not do it for you and there is no way to shorten the depth of the 1911 grip.

In my experience, there is nothing that feels like a BHP does in the hand. You can't try to recreate it on another gun, it ain't possible! :D
I'm afraid I can't offer much help with 1911 grips, except to say shoot the 1911 first next time!

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not trying to recreate the feel of the BHP in a 1911, I know that's not possible. They are two different guns, single vs. double stack, etc. Just trying to get a little more comfort and contolability.

Is your MSH flat or arched?

Side by side, I like my BHP w/Spegel grips better than my Springfield (this is the old model with a normal front strap).
Swapping the arched MSH for a flat one made it much closer. The beavertail needs to be a little higher up and deeper in, then then it be pretty close. Finally, high cutting the front strap would probably make them pretty equal (to me).
Now, if I put a long trigger on the 1911 after all those mods, it may actually beat my HP in terms of feel. But I won't know till I try it.
