Forty-Seven years ago the National Match 1963 ammunition employed was 7.62MM Match XM118 Lot LC12010 Bullet 173 Grains Velocity 2550 LC Army Ammunition Plant. I acquired a military ammunition can with the contents being the previously mentioned ammunition. Other than the exterior of the ammunition can exhibit areas of rust the contents showed no signs of physical damage. I surmise that storage did not occur in climate controlled area.
One of the problematic issues is the 173/172Gr-FMJBT bullet employed with the 1963 National Match ammunition. The bullet is an open base design. (A closed base design as an example would be the Sierra HPBT Match-King series) The open base design can be erratic.
I’ve gotten away from using my Remington 40X 7.62mm NATO 10” Twist. Today I decided to dial in the sights using the NM 1963 ammunition. I was pleasantly surprised. The plan was to sight in at two hundred yards but I was sharing the range with two contractors that were setting up their work guns. So a hundred yards it was.
As a side note those fellows had a 300-whisper bolt gun with sound suppressor and various configured AR upper units with different sighting systems. I’d say they had an estimated $30,000 plus inventory in the back of their truck. The one fellow I know and he is the real deal the other fellow I’ve never meant before.
Slinging up I fired the 40X from the prone position. Made my sight adjustments then fired a (10) shot string for validation. Three of the ten rounds are indicative of my errors in sight-picture, hold, and trigger control. The other seven rounds no complaints.
I had previously fired 200yd standing groups but was some what dismissive attributing it to a very good day.
