I have a old issue of gun's and ammo from 1994,and it give's it's top ten combat handgun's ;
1 Colt government model .45
2 Sig-sauer auto pistol's p220, p225, p226, p228, p229,
3 Smith and wesson K- and L- frame revolver
4 Glock pistol's
5 Smith and wesson J-frame revolver
6 Browning hi-power
7 Seecamp .32 auto
8 Para-ordnance .45 auto
9 Smith and wesson N-frame revolver
10 Beretta model 92 series autos

:what:What; That's what I said how can you in 1994 put revolver's in the top ten combat handgun's. and what the heck is up with the seecamp, that's a pocket pistol not a combat pistol.
Notice that no semi-auto smith and wesson's made the list.
I think that glock and sig should have been-oh well let me make my own list of what I think of 1994;

1 1911 all type's
2 Glock's
3 Sig sauer p serie's
4 Beretta m92
5 Browning hi power
6 smith and wesson semi auto's
7 CZ-75
8 H K usp
9 Ruger p89
10 Revolver's SW,COLT,RUGER,

Those are my pic's for top combat handgun's in 94.
Yea I know what I said about revolver's earlyer but in 94 many law agency's still used revolver's and many shooter's today carry revolver's and even if my first choice is a 1911 I keep a revolver for home defense.
Well agree with me or not let's hear you'r pic's for combat handgun for 1994.

Back in '94...

My Serious Guns were:

Gov't model of 1911, bone stock, full size, Combat Commander, Lt.Wt Commander.
BHP

3" K frames (model 10, 64)
Snubby K frames 10, 64, 66, 19.

J frames (36, 37)

Beretta Jetfire in 25 ACP, NAA Mini revolver (1 1/8" barrel)

Oh...Model 29 .

Best I recall anyways...
Then again my choices run the same going back further than '94, and after '94.

My take has always been - just what does a magazine know about me and my tasks?
They don't.

*smirk*

I like your list a liitle better.

Combat handgun for any year...... 1911... :)

Here is mine.

1. 1911
2. CZ
3. Hi-Power
4. 586/686/19
5. Sig
6. Glock
7. That's it.

It's obvious why revolvers are on the list circa 1994.

The AWB negated the main advantage of autos unless you wanted to buy expensive pre-ban hi-cap mags.

"Combat handgun for any year...... 1911... "

Even for the Spanish-American War?...:p

My #1 would be the LeMat.. plain old evil.

The really interesting thing is that if you were to make a list for 2007, how much would it differ from 1994's?

I doubt much.

When you think about the REAL LIFE role of a combat handgun (as opposed to Sillywood's version) a solid revolver is more than up to the task. The handgun is not for laying down a blanket of fire. It's for short range defensive use. Of course, I'd rather have one in .44 mag or .357 than .38, but for pilots and the like there's much to be said for a J frame or Detective Special.

I have a lot of old Gun Digest books around ... you see all kinds of odd things in them.

Back when the CZ 75 rage began (every writer was hot for them) CZ didn't HAVE an entity here, you got a Witness or Tanfoglio marked pistol.

Remember the HS 2000? Now its a Springfield XD.

In 1984, the list might look even stranger.

People still weren't 'convinced' about the 9mm back then, though police agencies were switching to it. You never saw a Glock on Miami Vice, but every gunwriter was talking up the Bren Ten, and the 10mm in general.

Let's fast forward to 2007.

The list got better.

1) STI/SVI 1911/2011 pistols
2) HK P2000
3) Cz-P01
4) Cz-75B
5) Glock 26
6) Glock 34
7) Ruger Gp100
8) Sig P226R
9) Steyr
10) Ruger SP101

You guys got me interested enough to pull out some of my old gun digest summary books from the late 70's to middle 80's. It is interesting to see that in the earliest ones revolvers are more then half the book. The Automag was still new, the Widley was brand new, the PSP was not made yet and the 45 acp could not expand bullets yet (or well).

Kind of entertaining to read about the perspective of the older views.

my list
1-1911
2-Browning HI-Power
3-1911
4-Sig P-Series
5-1911
6-CZ-75
7-1911
8-Ruger P-Series
9-1911
10-Colt,Smith,Ruger 4" 357 revolver

gLOCKS probably should be in the top ten but I left them off just to mess with the self obsessed Glockfan who will eventually put gLOCKS as all 10

My '94 list would look like this:
1. 1911
2. 92fs
3. BHP
4. Glock
5. SIG
6. HK USP
7. S&W J or K frame
8. Ruger GP100 or SP101
9. Colt Python
10. Walther P88

Interesting list, but since I own 7 of the 10 (or multiples of each), I have no reason to quibble.

Kinda reminds me of a VHS tape by the NRA, "Tales of the Gun" that I got on VHS 5 years ago for joining. They listed the top 10 most influential firearms as follows (if I recall correctly):

10. Browning Automatic Rifle
9. Kentucky Rifle
8. Matchlock musket
7. M1 Garrand
6. AK-47
5. Mauser rifle
4. Brown Bess musket
3. 1911
2. Colt Patterson revolver
1. Maxim machine gun

The problem with any such lists is it's OPINION of a writer who may or may not know anything or care about anything, but one type or brand or what not, in other words, he might be a gun snob. Anyway, I don't see how any such list could logically and objectively be compiled. There's just too many fine quality handguns out there on the market. My own list would be as follows......

1 Ruger P90
2 Ruger SP101
3 Kel Tec P11
4 Taurus M85UL
5 Ruger P85/89
6-10 I don't care.

A Seecamp in 32 caliber? :what: What was that man thinking?

My list for 2007 would be:
1) 1911A1
2) 92FS
3) CZ 75
4) 9mm Glock (I hate them but evidently I'm a minority)
5) Colt Python (If I could find one) ;)
6) Sig Sauer 229 in 40 cal.
7) Browning High Power
8) HK 45acp Full Size
9) Ruger P90
10) Taurus PT1911  (I know, but I bought one and it shoots!)

Funny that a .32 is on the list as a 'combat handgun'. Guess gunwriters hadn't sold their souls to the Mall Ninjas at that time... not yet, anyways.

Think I'll put mine in after deliberation. Too many good choices.

1. Webley Mark VI. So tacticool it had a bayonet you could mount on the end. Fired a 260-odd grain bullet so slow that you could run alongside it and grab your bullet out of the air before it hit the berm. Big and slow to extremes... I wish they'd make a .50 caliber round like that. Hefty bullet going at a reasonably low speed. Really nice ejection system - with single rounds, it can take out an eye. It's a gun so heavy that you can throw it at somebody and shatter their pelvis. Drop it on your foot and you'll need to get a prosthetic model.

Ooh, ooh! I wanna play!
  1. H&K USP
  2. SiG Pxxx (P220 is my favorite, but take your pick)
  3. 1911 (done right)
  4. H&K P7M8
  5. S&W M&P 9mm, .40 S&W (jury's still out on the .45)
  6. Beretta PX4 Storm
  7. Beretta 92FS
  8. Glock G17
  9. CZ 75B
  10. Springfield XD tactical
Some of 'em are neck and neck, and I couldn't decide which should take precedence, but the ranking is generally pretty accurate for my tastes.

Like others, how did the seecamp make the list? I was reading through, thinking check, check, interesting choice, check and then ***!?!?!?!? Seecamp?

Anyhow, I guess I'll play, too.

  1. Colt Government Model
  2. Colt Combat Commander
  3. Colt Lightweight Commander
  4. Colt Python
  5. Colt Anaconda
  6. Colt Single Action Army
  7. Colt Detective Special
  8. CZ-75
  9. S&W 13
  10. S&W 25
