20" barrel too short for a 22-250?

If I want to stick with a shorter OAL for a coyote calling rifle, would the 223 be a better choice or would the 22-250 be fine with the 20" barrel length.

The .22-250 will have higher velocity than a .223, if both barrel lengths are the same, regardless of length. OTOH, the .223 out of a 24" barrel is seriously approaching the .22-250's velocity out of a 20" barrel. If you're dead set on a 20" barrel, then yes the .22-250 will give a higher velocity, along with more muzzle blast and flash. :)

How far do you plan on shooting? As previously stated with a given barrel length 22-250 will always have a higher velocity. But that being said within 250yds a 223 will kill cyotes just as dead as the 22-250 but with less recoil, muzzle blast and with cheaper ammo.

LOUD.
That is the best way to describe a .22-250 coming out of a 20" barrel.

Ballistically it will still outperform a .223 but so what?

One shot from that 20" cannon barrel and every game animal within reasonable walking distance will be heading for other pastures!

I have a buddy with a 22" .22-250 and the muzzle blast is very impressive. Although I'm the sort who'd rather tote a longer, heavier barrel, I can't see that he's lost too much performance out of his given that his chrono'd 3,900 fps with Winchester white box ammo!

edit: I put too many zero's on the first time!

i love the .22-250, but you'd better make your shot count, cause it's LOUD.

my hunting buddy uses a .22-250 with a 24" barrel, and even at that length it's a screamer.

but he's taken everything from javelina to elk with it.
