20 gauge buckshot

The only thing in 20ga buck that is readily available around here, is #3. I have not found it to be a particularly good choice, but then its about the only choice.

At close range, it will do. I took my first deer, when I was a boy, with a Stevens single barrel 20ga, and #3 Buck.

Read my post on the thread by Drjones regarding a HD shotgun for a lady. Within the artical I posted in that thread there is some 20 ga. buckshot recommendations.

What I use in mine is some 3" Federal #4 buck which I am not sure is available anymore , or the #3 buck 2&3/4 inch from any of the manufactures. One on line source would be "Cheaper Than Dirt" which sells 5 packs of the #3 buck for about $2.40 as I recall.

Good Luck !

Cheaper Than Dirt usually has a good supply of several brands of 20 gauge buckshot.

In my limited experience, I have discovered that my Saiga 20 likes the 3" Federal #2 the best. This is an 18 pellet load. It is not what you want for the recoil sensitive. If low recoil is your objective, then you will have to drop down to one of the 2 3/4" loads. There, #3 buck is your only choice.

When it comes to buckshot, the 12 will do anything that the 20 can, and usually do it better. The advantage that the 20 has is that it can do it in a lighter package, with a little less recoil.

A shotgun shooting a given weight of lead at a given speed will have the same free recoil as any other shotgun of that weight shooting that weight at that speed, regardless of gauge.

The limited testing of 3 buck I've done in the past with the 20 gauge YE here has a spread similar to most 00, just more, smaller holes. Another brand might have beaten it nicely.

In your shoes, I'd try both 2 3/4 and 3" buck in 3 and 2 sizes, and go with the tightest patterns. That's if the kick(Different from free recoil) is tolerable.

I doubt that if ten felons were lined up and shot, half with 2 buck and half with 3, that either would show any significant advantages.

natedog: cheaper than dirt. that's where i got my supply of 20 gauge buck and slug.

i think i'll have the buck for a very long thime, though. recoil in my single barrel is best described as brutal.
