Make a trip to New Zealand?

His was taken at 132 yards with a 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip in a Lilja barreled Model 70 in .270 WSM.
Mine (the larger one), taken at 318 yards with a Speer 90 gr Deep Curl out of a Stevens 200 in .243 Win.

I shot my first whitetail (BIG doe) of the season yesterday. It was a 98 yard shot from a 20 foot ladder stand with a traditions 50 caliber muzzle loader, Hornady 250 grain bullets. The shot was higher than I would have liked, but still behind the shoulder and in the upper portion of the lungs. Unfortunately, it was high enough that it severed the spine and dropped it on the spot- but it was still alive and thrashing around in the open and making "that noise". For me, that is a hard thing to watch. So I had to exit the stand at light speed to get closer (sprint) to the deer and put her down. It could have been worse I guess, like a worse shot that led to a lost deer and a longer period of suffering (which fortunately I haven't done since I was a kid). Anyhow, since I had to use a .40 glock to put that deer down as quickly as possible, I didn't take a picture.

My niece got this during Missouri's youth hunt. It was the fourth deer that passed and she was anxious to try it her 6.5x55 that I have her for Christmas last year.
The coyote was at 300yds. The deer was at 75.

My buddy took his beagle pup out for his first “real” hunt today and he had one race where he circled the rabbit and we got it and another chase on a small bunny. On the way out we heard pheasants cackling and chased them for 45min and limited out. I had a blast and looking to do again.

For me, that beats deer hunting every day.

Oklahoma territory smiled on me this week during the muzzleloading rifle season when I took a really big whitetail buck. The temperature was in the 20's with a NE wind when the buck walked down a drainage that I was watching. Snow had just melted and green leaves were still on the trees. I was hiding in a small thicket of shrubs with my back against a bank and I used a shooting stick to steady the rifle. I hit him with a 430 grain super slug out of my White Super 91 50 caliber rifle. When the smoke cleared from the shot he was already on the ground. This buck weighed way over 200 pound with a 22 1/2 inch spread on the heavy antlers. The antlers are heavy, pretty and symmetrical. He was a basic 4 X 4 with double brow tines for 10 points. the tip on one of the brow tines was broken off but since I am a taxidermist I will fix it when he is mounted. The cape was near perfect with a 7 1/2 inch nose, was 22 inches around the smallest part of the neck and 3 inches down it was 26 inches. I was very happy to get this buck and he came after much preparation.

The more you take the dog out the better he will get. He sure has rabbit hunting in his blood. If I lived back east I would have a pair of beagles again.

Sage
That is a fine looking deer, prime condition.
What is the average dressed out weight of the deer in your area?

Where I hunt in Upstate New York they average 120 pounds dressed out.
I have shot a few that came close to 200 pounds field dressed.

Some really great tales and pics on this thread. Very enjoyable.
My 17yo son #3 tagged his very first archery deer this evening. A big doe. The broad broadhead passed through by the heart.

Well get those beans out so you can get in the stand!
If your luck has been like mine we're having fun in the snow. Hoping for a dry and sunny November...

Why isn't he helping you with the harvest???
He does help. He is in high school. He was in football but after two concussions in football and one from the skiing we thought it best if he didnt play. He agreed to make trapshooting and bowhunting his High school sports.
He would normally be in football practice this time of year....so I give him free rein on the afterschool bowhunts.
He is lucky that our hunting property is a 3 min atv bv ride from our back door.
