22-250 bullet weight ??

I have a ruger M77 MKII heavy varment in 22-250 its shoot crappy with 55 grn bullets when compared to my Mod 70 heavy barrel winchester in .223. what bullet weights are you guys using in your 22-250 ? thanks in advance

I use the hornaday 50gr SXs or Vmax in my M70, both'll constistantly print 3/4" 5 shot groups at a 100yards if I do my part.

I find that with a 1 in 14" 22-250 55grn boat tail bullets are right on the edge of what the twist rate will stabilize. Flat base 55grn bullets can shoot OK but a 55grn FMJBT will practically keyhole from my ruger at all but the most insane velocities.

If you must shoot 55grn bullets is a 1 in 14" rifle choose the shortest ones you can find.

50-55gr should be the ticket, but you are going to have to experiment to see what your gun likes best.

Do you reload? If so you might have to try various OAL's too.

I have a bull barrel Remington Varmint Special in 22-250
I use a Sierra 52 gr HPBT @ 3600 FPS
I have shot a 5 shot group @ 100 yds. that measured
.172 in diameter, checked with a toolmakers microscope.

I'd try 50gr Nosler BT's.

There are lots of factors in a poor shooting rifle besides twist rate. Could be a bedding problem, bad bore, etc. Could even be something as simple as a loose scope mount or defective scope.

from what I have gathered the gun has a 1-14 twist which is fairly slow and would be best with lighter grain bullets correct? I have reloaded for this gun and OAL makes little differance except that I cannot load them in the mag. I am looking for a load that will give better accuracy and 55 grn Nosler ballistic tip setting on 32 grains of blc2 isnt giving me what I want its not BAD just not what I know the gun should be able to do. Now that I know the twist is so slow I will move down to the 50 grn bullet

OAL makes little differance except that I cannot load them in the mag.

Here's some of my data...All are 6 shot groups, I shoot 6 because I always seem to have 1 "flyer", most of the time its the first shot down the clean barrel. All these were taken the same day, 65° ambient, 100yds with a 8mph L to R wind. I have sheets with 50Gr NBT's as well but didn't see anything better or worse than what these show. I clean the gun between groups as well...

The difference of .5gr of powder between the 1st and 3rd pic is frightening, I believe the 22-250 is extremely finicky.

52 grain sierra mk's or 50 grain v-max's...

as for loading, i've only loaded for two 22-250's and found them to be among the easiest guns to load for.

I should have mentioned, my experience is limited. My gun is a Remington 700 BDL with an improved trigger. Scope is a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x40. I've had good results with 50gr full metal jackets. Poor results with 62gr Nosler Partition's, not enough twist I think.

Can't wait to start working up loads for my new AR-15 in 204 Ruger.

My CZ 550 Varmint is also a 1:14. 55 PSP's are ok, and 52-53 HP's are alright. Otherwise anything over 55 wont stabilize. They don't keyhole, but they pattern. Sounds to me like you probably do have a slow twist barrel. Have you tried any other combos?

I am going to try the 50 grn noslers next to see how they do I know from my ar guys that 1-14 twist is too slow for many heavy bullets I do think that and 22 cal gun with a 1-14 twist is going to be really finicky and it will vary from action to action just a fact of life for most target style guns

Give Reloder 15 powder a try...I get great groups out of my Rem 700VS...using Reloder 15 with the nosler 55gr ballistic tips from velocities 3400fps-3600fps.
