Since I want to start taking more people to the range, I think getting my own .22 is in order. So what are the best bolt action .22's on the market today?

I am willing to spend a little more than $200.00 and ideally magazines would be preferred over tubes.

You'll not get 'the best' for a little more than $200. For $200 or thereabout, your best bet is the Savage. The Marlin can be had for a wee bit less, but it feels like a lot less rifle. If you can afford to spend more, the 77/22 is a nice choice.

I've got a Marlin Model 25N that sounds exactly like what you want. It uses a 7 round magazine (although I believe 10 rounders are available from Marlin), basic iron sights, and has a dovetail cut in to the receiver for mounting a scope if you so desire.

Oh, and by the way, it is ACCURATE! Jeez, these Marlin .22's are great!

I paid $104 for mine several years ago, but the price hasn't gone up much since then. I think they're like $150 or so now.

Great little gun...

If you plan to keep and enjoy this gun for many years, you may want to consider waiting a bit and getting a CZ452. It'll be $275 or so new, but it's a classic that you will not outgrow. If you can find a used CZ/Brno, Remington 500 series, or Winchester 60 series, you will have yourself a sturdy and classic .22 bolt good for teaching basics, but able to grow with you and worth upgrading.

I've owned a Marlin and it was an OK gun. The Savage seems nice, but some have feeding issues. Ruger is another classic.

Gun trades usually lose money, so better to wait and buy better than basic. Let us know how you fare.

The CZ 452 can be had for right around $200 if you buy the Military or Trainer model (which is identical to the excellent Lux model save for the beech stock). Great iron sights, too. Perfect for practice and general plinking. It comes with a five round magazine, but ten round magazines are also available.

Check www.cz-usa.com for more info and www.jgsales.com for sales.

The heavy barreled Marlin and Savage fit your needs. I also agree the Savage feels more like a real, adult rifle than the Marlin. However, I also agree that getting one of the cheaper CZ is worth spending a few more bucks for in this case. You won't be sorry you did.

CZ 452 Special or Trainer. But if it were my money, I would wait and save up a few more bucks for a 452 American or a 452 Lux (if you don't plan on scoping it).
