Looking to invest in a .22 Break Barrel NP for pests,..specifically feral cats, mongoose, and chickens. My .177 isn’t strong enough for the size of pests at the range I’m shooting at (15 to 35 yards). Quieter gun is preferred and budget is up to $250. Suggestions are appreciated.

Welcome to THR.

Hatsan frequently gets the value for money not these days. Apparently their FPS numbers are given for lead pellets rather than the lighter, faster PB pellets.

Pyramid Air has a lot of reviews and is good about listing features, so a good look through their options may help make a decision.

I own this rifle ( link provided ) and the XS25 bamboo shown in video They are absolutely amazing shooters. Probably the best rifles made for a great price. You can't go wrong with either one. Mike sells a amazing product. This rifle is modeled after the RWS34. And if Mike tunes it for you will get a rifle that need no break in period. In my opinion the best rifles for the least amount of money. You absolutely have to check these out.

If you absolutely must have a gas ram break barrel air guns of Arizona is running a special on the Diana 340 ntec. Personally I have found fixed barrel guns easier to shoot accurately and I also think gas rams over rated. Spend whatever it takes for quality and practice, practice, practice. Cheap springers and instant gratification syndrome have soured a lot of shooters on AG’s. Good luck with whatever you choose.

No expert here by any means. Got a Benjamin Trail .22 cal. break barrel with the Nitro Piston 2 gas system a few years ago. For what I need it works good and has taken squirrels at 20-25 yds. Have chronographed various pellets out of it at speeds from an average of 736 fps to 832 fps depending on pellet weight and design. It's not a high end air gun and I have no other air gun experience to compare it with. But for occasional use it keeps me happy.

What do you consider a cheap Springer?
Name the brands your referring to.

Thanks for the responses. I’m considering the options on Pyramid Air and Flying Dragons.

Will be getting the XS28 from flying dragon soon. They are amazing product for the price.

Chinese mostly not to say you can’t get a good one but uneven quality. Refurbished Diana 34’s can be had for around $200 and are far better IMO than the Chinese guns in general. Turkish hatsan s good build quality but over sprung and rough around the edges. T06 trigger is worth the difference in cost by itself

Xisico is a excellent Chinese rifle holds up to any German or English rifle.

I have multiple Hatsan they are quality built. All deliver at least or more fps advertised. They are all accurate. I have adjusted the triggers to a light lbs pull. Only my Magnums are hold sensitive. But that's easy enough to figure out.

German and English rifles are overrated. I have a few and they are nice but most that say how great they are have never even shot any other brand.

I went with a Nitro Venom for a quiet .22. Good gun but not amazing.

Where do you live that mongoose and chickens are pests, if you don't mind my asking? If not in the US it may change our answers some.

A good .22 will cleanly take animals but the shots have to be very well placed. Not much energy in them when compared to even a .22 long unless you get into PCP guns and heavier pellets.

Be skeptical if high velocity claims as they are usually done with alloy pellets which weigh near nothing. I also haven't had any light alloy pellets shoot well for me. However, I did not test them much as I went back to what worked quickly.

Flying dragons won’t guarantee returns. Stick to pyramyd, airgun depot or amazon.

chickens, mongoose and feral cats are abundant in Hawaii.

monitor amazon for hatsan 95 for $150.

Mike at Flying Dragon will take care of you. Have never had a bad experience with him.

Amazon no longer accepts returns on air rifles.

Always the Diana MDL 34, even a used one. In fact some used are better than new ones. Any R Series Beeman, HW, TX. Best break Break Barrel for accuracy, quiet, smoothness and feels and shoots like a custom tuned Air Rifle, is the Walther LGV. The Freaking gun so well made. but plan to spend about $6-8 hundred dollars. AND if you Want Quiet, this is the gun. Mine is 22.cal
Best quality Budget guns are Stoeger.

The Diana 350 Magnum is a good break barrel spring piston rifle. The refurb is slightly out of your target budget but a better gun than the Nitro Piston.

The 350 is a nice quality gun. And powerful as hell. But be prepared to feel like you are jacking up a house when cocking. I have the Diana 460 mag. Later had it DETUNED for more pleasant shooting. That said, the 22.cal could whack the heck out of a pine tree at 100 yds.The 350 has serious recoil and is known as a Scope Eater.

I had a chinese made crosman optimus that I loved. After 5 years the piston spring broke, snapped into pieces.

My Hatsan .30 Carnivore pushes a 50 grain pellet at 590 fps that's 38.6 fpe.

I have tuned and increased the gas ram to 160psi more than factory specs. It's a beast and will take a coyote easy.

ihave owned a crosman optimus,f4, (gamo b19 copy)(tech force 89(equivalent to the Chinese beemans)which are copies of norica Marvik)xisico xs25(Diana 34 clone) hatsan 85 and edge, Remington express(frankengun copy of diana34/hw95) and some others that I can’t recall offhand. Some were good some were not. None were in the same class as my 3 Diana rifles in terms of accuracy. Power is not an issue as the 48 & 350 make over 20 ft/lbs. I am not recommending that the OP buy any particular gun or brand. Just giving my opinion. Whether any Are over or underrated I don’t know. I do know that I spent a lot of money trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear with very uneven results. Again I am not saying you can’t get a good shooter cheap but I didnt have to shoot the Germans for long to notice the difference.
