Anyone have a suggestion on how to expedite seating flat base .223's in a progressive? Chamfering works but its another step. I was wondering about making a ball expander die that would touch just enough to help set a bullet for seating and letting a crimp finish post seating. Then I thought I ought seek the wisdom here. I'm not trying to make match grade stuff and don't see keeping the brass through enough re-loads to anneal. Thoughts?

My own reply. I took an old die and replaced the decaping pin with a bolt that I lathed the end into a tapper. I placed this after the powder charge and set it so it just touches the mouth of the case and leaves a very small and gentle flair. It's just enough to keep the flat base bullets from falling off. The last die is a crimp and the things look really good. I really did not want to chamfer some 7,000 cases.

I use a 3-way cutter/trimmer so it's not an extra step for me. Then it all depends on who's seating die your using. Hornady's with their drop down sleeve does all the alignment for you. But in any case you don't want to have any any roughness that will damage the jacket when seating.

There is no need to crimp a 223R.

Had the same issue

The solution I use is a Lyman M die, especially when using an RT 1500 to trim.
