Personally, I would stick that sucker back on the lathe and push that shoulder back to 4.846”, drill the port, and rock and roll with a $12 pistol length gas tube.
 
I like the idea. how do I plug the hole I put there? Were off to the NRA show. back in about 10 days. Thanks for everything hat more upon return.
 
You can TIG them. I've had to do that on AK barrels other people botched the port location on.

Agreed, but in this particular case of Could and Should - I’m with Malcolm on this one.

The effort to put the port in a standard length location to make use of existing gas tubes is usually easy. If the port’s already in the wrong place, then the risk/reward profile for me looks long and hard for a means to swage a custom gas tube before I welded a port. I might even get on board with a custom “correcting” gas block given access to a mill and lathe, but not a means to swage tube.
 
Like a block that sleeved back over the shoulder (or.just had an extension)to get to the desired length?

Looking at his pic with the tape measure, he might be able to push the shoulder back, make an overlength block, then drill the port in the block at an angle to let a pistol length tube reach the rear of the block.

Or drill an inlet port at the barrel port position, a longitudinal correction bore, and another vertical bore to connect to a pistol length gas tube, which would then take a threaded & welded/staked plug, or a welded pin plug.

Ways to skin that particular cat, if he were more equipped to do machining work than tube swaging. Gas blocks aren’t particularly difficult to fabricate.
 
Back from the NRA. What fun! Lots of talent. Talked with Les Baer and got to play with his own 38 super. Steve Hornady, a lot of shooters. New product and a lot of booths were selling right out the booth. Watched a guy win a .50BMG with a huge chunk of Vortex glass on it. Walked right out of the show with it on his shoulder. I think he dislocated his jaw with that smile he had. Anyway back to my project. Thanks everyone. My thoughts are to harvest the old gas tube and cut the same slots down where I need them. Second is to make a sleeve, a coupler, and solder the ends to the correct length. I don't think regular solder would hold? Would it melt? Can aluminum take silver solder? What happens if the end is not swaged? I could also thread both ends and make a threaded coupler?
