i was wondering if the .223 can be loaded to subsonic speeds and still work in an AR-15. not to nessisarly cycle the action, but if they would work, and be accurate??

i have a 1/9 twist, and some 75 grn hornady a-max's laying around, anyone have any sub sonic loads for this? i also have some 40 grn nosler ballistic tips and 55 grn moly v-max if the 75's wont work. i would like to keep the 55 grn v-max for suppersonic if possible, i have an awsome round loaded up using h4895. i cant seem to get a good load with the 40;s though.

thanks guys, for all your help. brian

yep, search. there are lots of threads about this.

edit: well, since i managed to double-post, i may as well say something else...

ballistically, it's going to stink. but it's still fun. the heavier the bullet, the better off you are. I wouldn't waste my time with the 40g. the 75 will probably work, but be careful what's on the end of your barrel. if they don't stabilize you could hit a compensator or baffle. would be bad.

I've been surprised at how many companies are offering subsonic data now. it's starting to get popular.

There are some recipes from Hodgdon that are subsonic but they are only listed for 55-gr bullets.

What do you wish to accomplish by sending some fairly expensive A-Max bullets downrange at such slow speeds?

for one... i have them, and two, i cant seem to find a good load for the heavyies in my rifle. probably just dont have the right recipe. would be interested for any help here as well, brian

I have had good luck with Blue Dot in 7.62 for my DPMS AP4. They do not cycle the action, but they are very quiet. The load is less than 10gr, but I am at work and do not have the info in front of me. I am sure the same can be done with 5.56
