All these ideas on why it doesn't pay to increase manufacturing capacity are great, but with .22LR shortage going on it's 4th year, the negative fallout of this may be the serious shrinkage of the mass market for .22LR. Yes 9mm may be 2x the cost at current prices but it's more than 2x useful for general self defense, unlike .22LR it can be reloaded so the price difference will be negligible, and a 9mm carbine is just as great / easy to shoot for target practice as a .22LR rifle - while being far more useful for self defense. Of course popping squirrels with a 9mm seems like a bit of overkill.

Don't think that there has been no increase in 22LR manufacturing capacity - I remember hearing Tom Gresham report that after studying the market for a while, some 22 makers have decided that when the panic buying ends, the "new normal" will be much higher than it was not that long ago.

I know there are a number of 22 makers that have expanded - how big an expansion, and if / when they'll all be online I don't know.

I was down in Columbus, Ohio this past weekend and stopped with my son and grandson at the Cabela's. They had the Federal AutoMatch 22 LR in the 325 round boxes for $18.99 or about 5.8 cents a round. Limit of one per customer. This was about 12:30 PM in the afternoon. Last trip down a few weeks ago they had the 525 round boxes of Remington Golden Bullets 22 LR (Remington #1622C). I forget the price but seem to recall about 5 cents a round.

So the stuff is out there.

I believe cci may have expanded some what as they seem to consistently become in stock at multiple places very regularly. only stuff I have ever seen on the shelf is cci and Remington the cci isn't setting around yet I see it more often than any thing and well the Remington is unfortunatly Remington I have passed it up even when I have had no 22lr at all.

Today I went to the LGS. I was trying to buy some SIG mag, s he had said he had, he didn't have them ! As I was looking to see what he did have, I heard the clerk on the phone calling people to let them know he had .22LR. ammo in. Sure enough he did! First time in 9 months! Some Winchester power points HV at $18 per 100rd.s & 2 - 525 rd.bricks of Remington golden bullets at $58.00 ea. And people were coming into town to get it. This is insanity! Only the rich will be able to afford ammo at this priceing! The ammunition situation seems like backdoor gun control to most people that spoke about it.I didn't buy any as I still have some.

"Only the rich will be able to afford ammo at this priceing!"

You're kidding me, right?

Does this mean that only the rich can afford a 100 round box of WWB .45 ACP for about the same price as the brick you listed?

You still get about 5 times the amount of .22 rounds for about the same price as a 100 round box of WWB, for the price you listed

People pay significantly higher prices per round for nearly all other ammunition on the market than for .22 LR. Yet I wouldn't say that "only the rich" can afford it.

:scrutiny:

Either your shop or his supplier is gouging - they sell for half that from my LGS, less than half that at Walmart.

While I sincerely appreciate their efforts I think I'll just continue to buy the same thing at Cabela's for around 24 bucks. By me doing so it will allow those who want to pay the $58 price more to buy. My parents taught me to be compassionate, especially towards incredibly stupid people.

Get real, only the rich? There is plenty of 22 LR out there to be had at normal prices. I have done well at Cabela's boh retail store and online as well as Gander Mountain local retail. I went into this latest and greatest well prepared and much of what I have bought recently has been given to family and friends to help them out.

After following this thread for a while and having a self reflection moment I realize I AM the problem. 40 years or so ago I shot a fair amount of .22 ammo, anywhere from 100-300 rounds/week in indoor smallbore competition. Then around 30 years ago life took over and due to extenuating circumstances, wife and kids, I dropped to maybe 100-200 rds/YEAR. I'm sure this gave the manufactures a false sense of demand. Fast forward to about 5 years ago, kids grown, more disposable income...got back into shooting smallbore. Shoot at least 4 leagues / year between gallery, siloutte and pistol. This accounts to over 2500 record shots plus practice. Almost got caught at the beginning of the "scare" but placed several case orders which have been shipped in the past two years keeping the coffers full. At this point I will keep at least 3 years worth .22 on hand which 5 years ago way 300-900rds, today we're talking 10,000+. So for my part I apologize.
Shoot straight, shoot often, have fun and BE SAFE.
Gotta go place another order :what:

The problem is that the two Wal-farts closest to me haven't had ANY .22LR in at the various times I have been there since late '13. And I've gone anywhare from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As for that $58 price quoted, a local regional chain, Rural King, had the Winchester 555 bulk for that price.

I passed.

Last week, a LGS had CCI Mini-mag 36 gr. HPs (product code #0031) for $11.99, also more than I wanted to pay but I also wanted the boxes for storage of the bulk stuff after I shoot up the CCI.

Why are .22 lr prices so high

Last week I was on an auction site that had a lot of .22 LR for sale.
At the time it was five boxes of 525 rounds and the bid was $280. Now there is a 10% buyers premium on top of the bid, price plus shipping.
Prices are high because people are willing to pay outrageous prices.
Last week I bid on seven boxes of .223 I was willing to pay .40 a round. The final bid was almost .80 a round.
I don't know if this new BS ban on .223 has any effect.
Today I picked up three 100 round boxes of CCI .22LR for $7.45 a box.
Even that is high because I was buying boxes of 225 for 9.75 and 525 for 19.50 (long gone). The clerk at the local wal mart said when they do get 22's, 225's are around $12.00 and 525's are around $24.00.

Those who buy up the supply from the retailers, then demand a high price on the secondary market that they have created, and the foolish consumer buys.

That folks is the current story of supply and demand.

If not then inform us as to why the largest retailer in the world has not raised their prices to any extant!

I bought 200 rounds from the local Academy for $10 last week. My wife also bought 200 rounds since they had a 2 box limit. That is the 1st I've seen at a fair price in a year.

Supply and demand. I was in Cabelas yesterday and they had no 22 ammo. And the sign out for it said only 2 boxes of 50 or 1 box of 100 when it is in stock per customer.
That was the Scarborough Maine store.

A couple of months ago I bought a 325 round bulk pack at Cabela's for $18. I thought the supply situation was easing up since they had most of an endcap in the ammo section full of .22s, but a couple of weeks ago the same Cabela's store had exactly ZERO rounds available. (This was at the Buda, TX store.)

Those who buy up the supply from the retailers, then demand a high price on the secondary market that they have created, and the foolish consumer buys.
No. I've spoken to clerks at Cabela's, Academy, Walmart, and local gun shops, and unless everyone is telling me the same lie, they're simply NOT getting supply at the retail level; IF the manufacturers are making .22 at full capacity as they claim, then someone is intercepting it BEFORE it gets to retail level.

And with most retailers limiting quantities to 1 or 2 boxes, imagine how many trips through the checkout line it would take for a hoarder/price gouger to clean out the pallet of .22 ammo that the big retailers USED to routinely get during their normal shipments. If the price gougers were stocking up by buying from retailers, they'd be spending a whole day in the store, going back and forth from the shelves to the registers with their box or two of ammo.

And considering how long this situation has prevailed, the hoarders must be sitting on a veritable MOUNTAIN of product by now.

No idea about central Tx, but here in the upper Midwest all one needs to do is check out the folks selling bricks of .22's at the gun shows to find support for my statements.

Some bricks even still have the WalMart price stickers on them.

Just take a look at the type of "dealers?????????????" are selling them on Gun Broker.
