.22lr MEGATHREAD

Gander Mountain opened up a new store in O'Fallon, IL a couple of weeks ago. I had gotten a mailer telling about a "preview" the night before their official opening. While there, they had 3 sizes of Winchester bulk packs and you could have one of each. :)

The prices were higher than I wanted to pay but the quantity and availability swayed me. These were the 36 gr. HPs in 555s for $34.99 ($0.063/rd), 333s for $22.99 ($0.069/rd), and 222s for $14.99 ($0.0675/rd). Two days later, I went back and they still had those three Winchesters plus some Remington Thunderbolts 500s for $29.99 (I passed on those) and Remington "Goldens" 525s for the same $34.99 ($0.0666/rd) (I did get these).
:D
Becaue of these sales, I was able to get over 2K rds in 3 days - more than I've been able to find in 3 years!

I was in Walmart in Columbus GA on Sunday at 7:30 AM and they had 8-10 boxes of Golden Bullets. I got three and talked to the girl. She said the same 3-4 guys come in every day early and buy all they can.
I have plenty but had given most of my Goldens away over the past year or so. We will shoot up all of these over the July 4th weekend.

people keep talking about ''scares'' when 22lr was hard to get.
i didn't know that happened besides now.
can somebody please tell me how often this happens?
i've been shooting off n on for a long time but not running thru lots of ammo til now. i never was unable to get 22lr locally before.
I really don't know but on average maybe once a decade. This time things returned to the shelves pretty quickly with the exception of the lowly 22 LR flavors. I learned during the BS of the Clinton Administration to always maintain a good stock of ammunition and loading supplies. Just a matter of how the political winds blow (or suck as the case may be). Those burned this time around learned and next time (and there will be a next time) they will be well prepared and a new group will learn.

Let another lunatic like Adam Lanza create another nightmare like Sandy Hook and we will see DejaVue all over again. It's a fragile system.

thanks, ron. if it happens that often, i'll prepare.
kinda hard to stockpile now, paying 10 cents/round, but i'm buying a bit more than i use.

I paid $.045 per round including tax on the Goldens I got at Walmart. I bought some Stingers at a different Walmart a couple of weeks ago and those were the first 22LR I have seen in a Big Box store in three years.

Over the years here is what I have done. When out and about if I see a good deal on ammo or reloading components I buy it. Fortunately I have the ways and means, I would not advocate a new young shooter spend his rent on 22 LR. :)
Over Memorial Day weekend I was in NC visiting friends. They have a pretty good gun show that weekend every year. I saw some Bullseye Powder and the guy had two pounds at $25 Lb. I figured even though I am well stocked with Bullseye and gave my brother some why not? So I grabbed the two pounds.
Ammunition and loading components when stored properly last for decades so with a long shelf life grab it when it's available at a good price. I have had excellent luck with 22 LR at the local Gander Mountain (Twinsburgh, Ohio) and the Cabela's in Columbus when I go down to see kids and grand kids. When in the neighborhood I just stop and see if anything I want is out there.

maybe if i traveled more i could find reasonably priced ammo.
here on the high plains, there is none available at any price.
i can only buy online.
you guys are lucky.

I finally scored 200 rounds of CCI Mini Mags and 120 rounds of American Eagle at a big sporting goods store over the weekend. They had a 2 limit on the CCI and 3 on the 40 round boxes of American Eagle so I just went two days in a row. They seemed to have plenty. Cost me just over 30 bucks total. I'm just happy to find some local. The last time I found .22 at a Walmart was two years ago at least.

Within the last ten or so days I've gotten about 3k rounds. Have to do the math.

325 Federal at Gander Mountain. $26. 1k of Remington at Dunhams. $24/500.

Another 650 of Federal at Dick's for $19.99/325 box

400 rounds of American Eagle at Cabelas

500 of Remington at Walmart (resold to a friend)

In the past couple of years, it was about impossible to get. Lots of stores around here are getting some now. So, if you haven't gotten an recently I suspect it will be coming real soon.

I bought some CCI Tactical yesterday and also some Velocitors. I paid 9 cents a round for the CCI. I probably wouldn't have paid that much except I have never shot any of that ammo before and I wanted to try some. The Velocitors were way too expensive but I only bought 50. I only had another box of 50 in the safe. It's a good round to have for varmint control but I wouldn't want to shoot it for target practice.

I could have bought Federal for 6.8 cents a round but it's been hit and miss on quality in the past few years IMO. And I have plenty of it in the safe already.

i can't touch those prices, you lucky thing.

Which prices do you mean Susie? Cabellas had the CCI Tactical and Minin Mags for the same price. I don't know where you live. The high plains covers a lot of territory as you know.

cz, there are no 22lr available in rural new mexico. federal bulk costs a dime apiece nicer rounds like cci up to fourteen, online.

I hate to let you all know this but I buy .22LR for about 7 cents a round all the time. I can pretty much always find some. And things are getting better. I'd guess that pretty soon things will get better where you live too. But until then you do have my sympathy.

7 cents ! oh grrr!
see, i have no choice but to pay whatever is demanded.
i got a22/45 a few months back n i'm shooting 1000 rounds/month to master it.
until it does what i want i can't stop practicing.
i figure it will take 10,000 rounds.

I guess it helps that I had a stockpile before all this started so I get to wait until I find a good deal before making any buys. I know that doesn't help if there isn't anything to even turn down. Dang that stinks. I bought a case of CCI SV 3 days before the Sandy Hook massacre. I guess I was lucky but I had been seeing warning signs of another coming shortage. I wasn't going to get caught in the lurch again so I stocked up on every caliber I have a gun to shoot except for .25 ACP and I could care less about that old Raven. It's only good as a paper weight anyway. I guess I liked it enough when I couldn't afford anything else but that was a long time ago.

well, now i know about shortages. if prices ever go down, i'll stockplie enow not to worry.
right now i'm buying more than i shoot, but i can afford just so much.
rugers are kinda crappy right out of the box so i had to pour money into the pistol.
this is turning into one expensive hobby.
