Mosquito will shoot bulk ammo but only if you give it a healthy oil bath, or use Eanos slide rite lite lube.

I'd avoid the Walther P22 completely if I were you. The one I had literally jammed 3+ times per magazine with different magazines. The gun was clean and in good shape too. Something had to be out of spec. Whatever, it just didn't work with any ammo type.

The Ruger MK series is excellent as is the 22/45. I also have nothing but good things to say about the Beretta Neos, which so far has been awesome.

SR22.

I like it so much I bought a second one and plan on buying a third.
I also have the Ruger MK I, II & III, Beretta, Brownings, etc, etc. and I shoot the SR22 more than all the other 22 pistols combined.

Every one that shoots the SR22 likes it (three shooters today).

I shoot the SR22's a LOT. I have no idea how many 550 Wal Mart bulk packs have gone through the guns

One gun has a Crimson Trace laser, which is used for low light practice several evenings a week (home range).

Ruger is making some good guns lately. The SR22 is one of them.

You can always get a Sig "Classic" (I have a P226, though there are a few others) in .22lr. It's a full-size gun, and you have the option to upgrade to calibers like 9mm, .357SIG, .40S&W and .45ACP.

I bought my 9 year old daughter a S&W Model 63, and she really loves it.

I love the Sa trigger on that revolver - I think it's fantastic.

The revolver thing is out, due to the fact he will be using this for action pistol practice which pretty much rules out the buckmark and neos type pistols. Otherwise he would just keep shooting the single six. It appears most people love the SR22 so maybe this will be one of the top choices.

I have a Beretta Neos and love to shoot it. I had serious issues with Federal brick ammo as every fifth round or so would crimp and fail to enter the feed ramp. I suspect the spring may not have been strong enough but that was never the problem with Remington Thunderbolt or Winchester White Box brick ammo.

I shot my son's M&P 22 and was really amazed how accurate it is and how smooth the double action trigger. It has made me seriously consider the M&P 45c when it becomes available.

If 1911 style pistols interest you (or him), consider the Browning 1911-22. Same manual of arms as a .45 in a package that's sized just right for kids.
I second that; the 1911-22 is a great gun. Smaller than a 1911, but completely to scale, and still fits well in a large hand.
