.22lr tracers - source?

I've seen a few different places offering tracers for .22lr, but the prices are crazy - $8 for 10, $100 for 250, etc.

Is there any source for less expensive .22lr tracers, or is that just the going rate nowadays? My dad was telling me about 20 years ago, that the tracers were about twice times the price of regular ammo. I could pay that, but 40 cents each (or more) is just too much.

Tom, What you found is probably about it. There is 1 or 2 mfgrs IIRC. They are a specialty item, with little market.

I gave up on the 22 tracer after I bought a new box years ago. (they were loaded by Eley, IIRC) They didn't trace out of a pistol, and about 1 in 3 or 4 didn't trace at all. I still have some left and I fire one occasionally. They aren't very bright so you have to shoot them at dusk to see the effect. They were a cool idea, but no better than they worked, a waste of money.

Strange - the type out now says "Made in USA" and they guarantee trace in anything over 4" barrel...

^cabelas has them, but they're nearly as high as .30-06 and .223 is.

That's because .30 and .223 tracer bullets are available through military surplus channels, even if they have to be loaded by the manufacturer into civilian cartridges. AFAIK that's what you get. So you're not paying the full price for the bullets.

.22LR tracer bullets have to be made specially; I don't think any military in the world uses .22LR.
