When I bought my first centerfire rifle I wanted it chambered in .270 Win. I'd always thought that it was a great cartridge. Well, sometimes things don't go as we plan. My first centerfire was a Remington 700 VS that was not offered in .270.
The guy behind the counter looked over the specs, and there were a lot of choices at the time. He told me the closest cartridge to a .270 was the .25-06. What a choice that was in 1978. I still have that rifle though I did wear the barrel out. It now sports a Krieger and shoots unbelievably small groups. I'll part with my .25-06 only when I'm dead.
But I envy you owning a .270 Win. In 38 years I never got the .270 that I wanted. That .25-06 did everything I ever asked it to do. It's been deer hunting and bear hunting in Canada. It has taken probably 800 groundhogs in Ohio.
If I buy one more rifle though I bet you can guess what cartridge I want.
